The song

NORMAL is the digital single BTS released on 17 July 2026. It carries five tracks and reissues the ninth song of ARIRANG, the fifth full-length album that came out on 20 March, with a Korean version alongside it. The credits in the album introduction on Bugs say Ryan Tedder and Sean Cook produced the song, with RM, J-Hope and Suga among the writers, and that Sean Cook played guitar, Tedder and Cook handled keyboards, drums and programming, and Jung Kook sang the background vocals. The music video went up on the official channel two days later, on 19 July.

Reviews

Idology (아이돌로지) gave the song two critics’ notes in its track-by-track piece on ARIRANG in April 2026. Yemi wrote that “the pleasure of the Auto-Tuned vocal and the way the chorus is staged — bursting an emotion driven to rough words, starting from ‘Kerosene, dopamine’ — was considerable”, and that “it is a fairly different genre from the opening stretch, a song where the vocal members stand out, but I liked how it fits the album by leading with force”. Randy wrote that “the vocal hook that catches the ear straight away was good”, and added that “it is a point of fun, too, that the four vocalists sing almost the same parts one after another so that each of their characters comes out clearly”.

Clash’s Maria Letícia L. Gomes gave ARIRANG 8 out of 10 and set aside a paragraph for this song. She wrote that “‘NORMAL’ continues in a similar vein, again produced by Ryan Tedder”, and that “lyrically, it reflects on the weight of expectation and the performance of happiness, hinting at a more personal layer”. NME’s Rhian Daly gave the same record four stars out of five, called the song infectious, and read it as caught between the highs and lows of attention.

What came with it

The release carries the English original, a Korean version and an instrumental. In the same Idology piece Yemi wrote of ‘Like Animals’, the song that follows this one on the album, that “I liked how it runs along the same line as the preceding ‘NORMAL’ in using a tragic chorus arrangement and Auto-Tune as its main materials” — reading this song as the one that sets the grain of the record’s second half. Clash’s Gomes picked the preceding ‘Merry Go Round’, produced by Kevin Parker, as one of the album’s strongest points and wrote that the record turns further inward from there.

Numbers

The label’s own distribution metadata prints the song as the standalone single NORMAL, dated 17 July 2026. The Korean version and the instrumental each sit there as singles of their own, and a week later, on 24 July, seven more singles appeared with a music-video still of one member each as their cover.

What came after

Before it came the fifth full-length album ARIRANG, four months earlier, with the digital single Come Over in between.
