Promise

The record

Promise is the single Doyoung released on 9 December 2025. It carries two songs: the title track ‘늦은 말 (Promise)’, whose Korean name reads as words said late, and ‘Whistle (Feat. 벨 of KISS OF LIFE)’. It came six months after his second full-length album, Soar.

The album introduction on Bugs describes the title track as a ballad that opens on a minimal keyboard line and builds its emotional depth as strings come in later. The lyrics, which Doyoung wrote himself, turn the feeling that grows harder to say as love deepens into a confession offered to someone he is grateful to. By the same text, ‘Whistle (Feat. 벨 of KISS OF LIFE)’ is an R&B ballad about two people passing their feelings back and forth through a whistle, with their two voices meeting over a jazz guitar line as though in conversation.

Reviews

Kim Ho-hyeon of IZM, in his single review of 25 December 2025, read the song as a summing-up of the ballad style Doyoung has built. He wrote that “the will to carry a message is clear, with the singer taking part in the song as its sole lyricist”, and that “the context of releasing a single the day after enlisting, and the song’s English title, let one imagine the artist’s warm feeling towards his fans”. Of Doyoung’s singing he wrote: “The vocal ability of a solid grounding is Doyoung’s weapon.”

Among the tracks

Doyoung wrote the Korean lyric of the title track ‘늦은 말 (Promise)’ alone, and the album information page credits the composition to Niklas Jarelius Persson, WILJAM and Cecilia Linné. Kim Ho-hyeon called it “an emotive track”.

Belle of KISS OF LIFE features on ‘Whistle (Feat. 벨 of KISS OF LIFE)’. The album introduction presents it as a song carrying a lovable flutter.

Around it

The music video went up on the official SMTOWN channel on the day of release. The Bugs album introduction states that Doyoung completed two Asian tours behind his first album, 청춘의 포말 (YOUTH), and Soar.
