Rains in Heaven

The song

‘Rains in Heaven’ is the English single NCT DREAM released on 23 August 2024. It was the group’s first new song after the mini-album DREAM( )SCAPE in March that year, and it went on to close the fourth full-length album DREAMSCAPE, out on 11 November.

The release notice on Bugs, written by SM Entertainment, describes the song as an eighties-styled pop track built on rhythmic drums and bass with synths over them, and says the lyric carries a promise to feel the pain of those who are worn out and to stand beside them. The same text credits Mark as one of the writers. The credits list Mark with Adrian Mckinnon and Bryn Christopher as lyricists, and Chris Collins, Kella Armitage and Jurek Reunamäki as composers.

Reviews

Jeff Benjamin of Billboard gave the song its own entry on 12 November 2024, in the piece ranking the eleven songs of DREAMSCAPE. He wrote that the English-language ballad closing the album reads as a tribute to the sentimental singles of nineties boy bands, and, noting Mark’s co-writing credit alongside two pop songwriters, that the track blends a classic synth-pop sound with an emotionally charged performance.

In the same entry he set out the song’s place: “As one of NCT DREAM’s few original English tracks, the sweet sounds of ‘Rains in Heaven’ mark a rare moment where a K-pop group delivers a crossover single in line with their concept and style. Plus, it makes for a perfect, heartfelt end to DREAMSCAPE, encapsulating the album’s balance of innocence and nostalgia.”
