Come back to me

The song

‘Come back to me’ is a single RM released on 10 May 2024, pre-released from Right Place, Wrong Person, the second solo album that followed two weeks later. The release carries two tracks, the song and a radio edit.

The album introduction on Bugs says the song holds the album’s main theme of right and wrong, and sings the idea that everything comes back — though perhaps not everything — as indie pop. The same text says RM looks into the contradictory feeling of wanting to try something new while also wanting to settle into what is already there. It describes a whistle, a guitar riff and a band sound laid over a quietly running vocal, and says HYUKOH’s OHHYUK composed and arranged the song, with Kuo of the Taiwanese band Sunset Rollercoaster on guitar and bass. The music video went up on the HYBE LABELS channel on the day of release.

Reviews

The Singles Jukebox gave the song a page of its own on 5 June 2024. The outlet prints a signed blurb and a score out of ten from each writer under one song, and this one drew twelve.

Mark Sinker gave it 7 and wrote: “Every time I had this playing while I worked – concentrating, barely even half listening probably – I was loving it, for the mood and the simplicity and the whistling; for the husky lightness at the edge of my attention.” He added, “And I like that even when you point your thinking listening mind at it, it’s still not much more than a feather dodging your grasp.” Ian Mathers also gave it 7 and wrote, “This feels almost aggressively shapeless, and I mean that as a compliment,” finding something appealingly weary and wary in it even when it hits a kind of stumbling crescendo.

Anna Katrina Lockwood gave it 7 and wrote that “‘Come Back To Me’ is a pretty nice song!”, describing it as languidly downtempo, minimally arranged and acoustically instrumented, with OHHYUK’s production as the dominant attribute. Katherine St. Asaph gave it 6 and wrote, “He sounds genuinely introspective, maybe that’s why.”

Binunmul, writing for Idology (아이돌로지) and placing the parent album among that site’s 16 albums of 2024, read this song as the album’s last word: “The steadiness that does not waver even when he is lost in confusion (‘LOST!’) forms the spine of the album, and the question mark that reached far out in search of the self comes, after a long journey, back into the interior of the human Kim Namjoon (‘Come back to me’).”

NME’s Rhian Daly wrote in her album review that this song is the final line of Right Place, Wrong Person, and the place where RM is at least ready to draw the conclusion that the boundary between right and wrong is more blurred than the world would have you believe. IZM’s Lee Seung-won marked it one of his five recommended tracks in the same album’s review.

The release carries two tracks, the song and a radio edit; the label’s own distribution metadata also lists the radio edit as a single of its own. On the album that followed two weeks later, the song is the eleventh and final track.

Right Place, Wrong Person arrived two weeks later, on 24 May 2024. Before it came Indigo of December 2022, and before that mono. of October 2018.
