Right Place, Wrong Person

The record

Right Place, Wrong Person is RM’s second solo album, released on 24 May 2024 with 11 tracks. The title track is ‘LOST!’. The album introduction on Bugs says the record is about the moments of feeling like a stranger who does not belong to the place, and that it arrives one year and five months after the first solo album Indigo of December 2022. The same text says RM took part in writing the lyrics of every track, made five music videos and one live clip, and chose three photographers himself for the concept photos.

The introduction says the record began from a question — what the ordinary young man Kim Namjoon would be like had he not taken this path. San Yawn, creative director of Balming Tiger, produced the album; RM formed a project team around him called TEAM RM and worked with it from the planning stage. Silica Gel’s Kim Hanjoo, the jazz duo DOMi & JD Beck, HYUKOH’s OHHYUK and Sunset Rollercoaster’s Kuo worked on the songs, and Little Simz and Moses Sumney appear as guests.

Reviews

IZM’s Lee Seung-won opened his album review of May 2024 by asking how many people could drive a line-up this lavish, a range of forms this wide and textures this beguiling into a single breath. He wrote that “the RM-style song camp, which gathered masters from all over Korea and abroad, leads naturally to the varied textures of the work”, and that “the skill of assigning people with strong colours of their own to exactly the right places is impressive too”. The same piece says that “what makes the participation of so many, and such large, talents all the more astonishing is that the axis of the work nonetheless sits unshaken within the artist himself”, and closes on “an aesthetics of connection and cooperation that has flowered like a wild flower on the asphalt of HYBE, the symbol of K-pop’s commercial side — independence in its true sense, found by maximising the value of being together”.

Binunmul, writing for Idology (아이돌로지), placed the record among that site’s 16 albums of 2024 and wrote that “Right Place, Wrong Person asks the fundamental question — am I really in the right place? — over and over from beginning to end”. He wrote that “it puts experimental hip-hop out front to express the confusion of identity, the unfamiliar feelings and the sense of not fitting in that everyone has met at least once, and yet, paradoxically, RM’s self shows through more clearly than ever”, and added that “RM’s second full-length album brings to mind a mysterious art museum you have come across by chance”.

NME’s Rhian Daly gave the record five stars out of five and wrote that “if ‘Indigo’ began to untangle the web of RM’s life, who he is and where he wants to go next, then this new record picks things up at a point where the unravelled threads are piling up and spinning chaotic new mazes”. She wrote that “together, the collective have crafted an album that is nothing short of electric”, and that “its often discordant layers viscerally reflect the album’s emotions of feeling out of place and its eventual message of the beauty in life’s imperfections, while it never seems to run out of ideas – whether across the whole record or in each individual song”. She added that “it’s an album that rewards repeat and close listens, each track full of little details that elevate each go round”.

Rolling Stone‘s Maura Johnston wrote that, “building on the sonic palette of RM’s 2022 solo debut Indigo, Right Place, Wrong Person is psychedelia-tinged and soulful, its lyrics’ intense self-interrogation balanced by music that feels like an invite to further explorations”.

Among the tracks

Of the title track ‘LOST!’, the album introduction says it carries the message that being lost may be all right as long as the friends beside you are there, and that several of the musicians who produced the record joined the backing chorus. Lee Seung-won wrote that “the title track ‘Lost!’, which expresses the psychology of a narrator who has lost his way in unsteady sound, is the representative example”. Binunmul wrote that “the steadiness that does not waver even when he is lost in confusion (‘LOST!’) forms the spine of the album, and the question mark that reached far out in search of the self comes, after a long journey, back into the interior of the human Kim Namjoon (‘Come back to me’)”.

Lee Seung-won names three songs together: “the placement of people — ‘Nuts’, which gains a groove of its own through the participation of Kadejo’s Lee Tae-hoon; ‘Domodachi’, which gives off a strong scent of Balming Tiger in its Japanese chorus; the interlude ‘?’, over which DOMi & JD Beck’s hands are spread thickly — and indeed the whole track order of the album, is without anything that could be called excess.” Daly wrote that “‘Nuts’, which deals with the dissatisfaction that can spring up through relationships, is disorientating in its constantly morphing phases, never letting you get fully comfortable in one before switching up again”, and called ‘Domodachi’ an ode to being with friends. Johnston wrote that ‘Nuts’ pivots out of a blown-out robo-funk bass, and that on ‘Domodachi’ an insistent woodwind loop and a furious guitar riff act as de facto clubhouse doors.

The closing track, Come back to me, was pre-released two weeks earlier on 10 May 2024. Lee Seung-won marked it one of his five recommended tracks on the record.

Idology placed the record among its 16 albums of 2024. The label’s own distribution metadata prints it as Right Place, Wrong Person, dated 24 May 2024. The album introduction says the concept photos were taken in Korea, the United Kingdom and Japan.
