Be There For Me

The song

Be There For Me is NCT 127’s winter special single, released on 22 December 2023. It carries three songs and the title track shares the record’s name. SM Entertainment’s album introduction on Bugs says it is the first winter song the group has released, and calls the title track “a pop R&B number in which a gospel organ melody, a rhythmic blues piano and brass meet”. The same text describes lyrics written in the form of a letter: the singer sends news of where he is in Seoul to someone far away, and promises to be beside them by the time the letter is finished. KENZIE wrote the Korean lyrics. The fifth full-length album, Fact Check, had arrived two months earlier.

Mimyo took up the single in his column for Weekly Donga (주간동아). Of the three songs he wrote: “There are differences of tempo and mood, but all three are built on R&B and give off a warm, fluent texture, and they are simply but well put together.”

He then set out the convention around winter songs. “There are exceptions, but it is the custom of the K-pop business that a winter seasonal song does not stray far from fan service,” he wrote, adding that “in that light the fairly generous run of teasers and self-produced videos, and the concept built up around the song, give the impression of a single that has had real effort put into it”.

Among the tracks

On the shape of the title track Mimyo wrote that “‘Be There For Me’ has a short verse and moves quickly into the chorus”, and noted as unusual that the bridge only arrives after the chorus has been heard four times. He read the structure as “possibly a trace of an eye kept on the carol and the like, which is structurally plainer than K-pop usually is”. He went on: “There is no trace at all of the complacency that says a song to be used up at the end of one year may as well wear thin quickly.” He gave two reasons for that. “One reason is that the instrumentation of the verse, which produces a light and gentle tension, is snug, and the sense of release as it moves into the bright chorus is attractive enough,” runs the first; “and it is also because the R&B vocal built around Haechan and Doyoung leads the verse faithfully, and the ad libs flying smoothly behind the chorus give an aural pleasure that is not to be dismissed,” the second.

The album introduction separates the other two songs. ‘Home Alone’ is a mid-tempo pop number whose lyrics take a witty line on wanting to stay in and amuse yourself through the cold, and ‘White Lie’ is an R&B ballad about being unable either to say how you feel or to get any closer, put plainly rather than tearfully. Of the single as a whole Mimyo wrote that “as an end-of-year seasonal song in particular it holds a good blend of warm, snug air and the brightness of a traditional boy group”.

The album introduction records that in 2023 the group played nine additional North and South American shows across seven cities on its second tour, released the fourth album’s repackage Ay-Yo, promoted the fifth full-length album Fact Check in October and played six Seoul shows on its third tour in November — and that the single was planned to repay that year of activity.
