The record
LOVE YOURSELF 結 ‘Answer’ is the album BTS released on 24 August 2018 to close the LOVE YOURSELF series. It runs to 26 tracks across two discs and is led by ‘IDOL’. BIGHIT MUSIC’s album introduction on Bugs calls it a concept album holding the essence of the series, and says the 16 songs on the first disc are linked by music, story and lyrics into one emotional line that runs from meeting and love to finding a self. The same text says that where LOVE YOURSELF 承 ‘Her’ expressed the flutter of love and LOVE YOURSELF 轉 ‘Tear’ held the pain of meeting a parting, this record answers that the only way to find yourself among your many selves is through yourself. It is a repackage, and it carries seven new songs.
Reviews
Idology (아이돌로지) carried the record in its 1st Listen for late August 2018, as short pieces by four critics. Mimyo wrote that “this boldly drawn double album sets the faction-like narrative of BTS’s success beside the fictional narrative of a character learning to love themselves, placing them as a kind of double reality”, and that “it is a fine ending, too, that the disc closes with ‘Answer: Love Myself’ taking the role of bright self-affirmation that ‘Magic Shop’ held on the previous record”. He added that “the large middle stretch, where ease and energy, lyricism and passion cross, is a splendid passage not to be missed”. Four months later the same outlet placed the record fifth in its best albums of 2018, where Oyo wrote that it was “an album that deserves to be called the summation of BTS’s music, one that hands the hip-hop the group led with early on to the rappers’ own mixtapes and puts future-leaning electronic music and EDM actively to work”.
Park Hee-a at weiv chose ‘IDOL’ as one of the year’s tracks in the same season, writing that “‘IDOL’ is BTS’s present tense”. She wrote that “this track, as BTS have always done, simply shows the BTS they see themselves as, and how the seven characters who make up that team come together as one”.
Two English-language outlets took the record up as well. Clash’s Malvika Padin wrote that “overflowing with positivity, the new album – an amalgamation of songs, both old and new- brings to a close an era of the band in the most inspiring way”, and gave it 9 out of 10. Billboard put the record first on its K-pop albums list for that year, writing that “Answer is a testament to BTS’ artistry and dedication to a creative narrative” and closing: “Though some may feel it’s a lot to ask of pop music to have substance as well as style, BTS’ Love Yourself: Answer lacks in neither regard.”
Among the tracks
‘IDOL’ is the song with a music video here, and the official channel’s upload is dated 24 August 2018, the day of release. The album introduction on Bugs describes it as a South African beat with Korean traditional rhythm and chuimsae calls layered over it, and a trap-groove rap held up by current EDM. In January 2026 The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis ranked BTS’s 20 best songs and put it 15th, writing that it blends the South African house variant gqom with pansori, heavy on synthesised gayageum and janggu.
‘Euphoria’, Jung Kook’s solo, was the theme song of the LOVE YOURSELF 起 ‘Wonder’ video released in April 2018 and opens this record. Idology placed it seventh in its songs of 2018, where Mimyo wrote that it “keeps faithfully to the genre rules of future bass and yet is not genre music, and however you hear it, it could only be a BTS song”. Of Suga’s solo ‘Trivia 轉 : Seesaw’, Mimyo wrote that it “sits at the ‘turn’ of the first disc’s own four-part arc but musically also closes its ‘development’, and is a track worth returning to for a long time”. Clash’s Padin read Jin’s solo ‘Epiphany’ as the point where the album’s message of self-love begins, and wrote of ‘I’m Fine’ that “while in the melancholic ‘Save Me’ the group pleaded for someone to take their hand and save them from the darkness, ‘I’m Fine’ is declaration of self-reliance”.
Numbers
The label’s own distribution metadata dates the record 24 August 2018. The English song titles come from the same place: ‘전하지 못한 진심’ is The Truth Untold, ‘보조개’ is Dimple and ‘고민보다 Go’ is Go Go. The second disc gathers songs and remixes from the earlier records, and the album introduction notes that the version of ‘IDOL’ featuring Nicki Minaj is a digital special track rather than an album cut.
What came after
