The record

MAP OF THE SOUL : PERSONA is BTS’s sixth mini album, released on 12 April 2019 with seven tracks. The title track is ‘Boy With Luv’, featuring Halsey. BIGHIT MUSIC’s album introduction on Bugs says the record closes the two and a half years that ran to Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer’ and opens a new sequence about the strength the group has gained, where it comes from and what shadow it casts. The same text says the title track’s subtitle reaches back to ‘상남자’ (Boy In Luv) from February 2014, and that it sings not of world peace or grand order but of the small, plain pleasures of love.

Reviews

Idology (아이돌로지) carried the record in its 1st Listen for mid-April 2019, as short pieces by two critics. Mimyo wrote that “the sweet, comfortable pop-leaning songs represented by ‘Boy With Luv’ stand out”, and that “there is a fan-service side to it, but it holds orthodox pop songs that could settle naturally into the global market, in trendy colours”. Of the fact that Halsey’s and Ed Sheeran’s own colours are not especially prominent on the record, he wrote that this “is also proof of the musical flexibility and digestive power BTS have in themselves”. Roji wrote that “BTS’s lyrics do not talk around things; they are frank and plain, and that is what stirs feeling and invites recognition”, and picked ‘Mikrokosmos’ as her recommended track.

NME’s Rhian Daly gave the record four stars out of five and wrote that “like many a Bangtan album before it, ‘Map Of The Soul: Persona’ impressively and cohesively flies from genre to genre, but sounds more confident than ever”. She added that “at only seven songs, it’s a lot shorter than most sprawling albums put out by their Western counterparts these days, but its concise tracklist leaves no room for filler, no space for even a note to be wasted”.

Billboard placed the record 16th on its 25 best K-pop albums of that year, writing that it is “both celebratory and thoughtful through its blend of songs that serve up poetic, witty lyrics alongside charismatic melodies and beats”, and that “Map of the Soul: Persona is exactly the type of reflective pop music that BTS excels in, and it’s precisely what the world needs at the end of the 2010s”.

Among the tracks

‘Boy With Luv’ is the song with a music video here, and the official channel’s upload is dated 12 April 2019, the day of release. Three months later Idology’s Randy wrote a piece on the song alone, noting that “the tight rhythm guitar running through the whole song conjures the imagery of the disco era”, and, after tracing the Korean and American references the album and song titles call up, that the group “built their present by cutting across both the Korean hip-hop of the past and the American teen pop of the same moment”. NME’s Daly wrote that the song “is addictive and deftly balanced, and has smash hit written all over it”. Billboard put it 15th on its 25 best K-pop songs of 2019, writing that “with its euphoric sound and a guest appearance from friend and fellow hitmaker Halsey, BTS created the single that encapsulated their worldwide domination”, and in January 2026 The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis ranked BTS’s 20 best songs and placed it 11th: “Decorated with a guest vocal by Halsey, Boy With Luv was BTS at their lightest: perfectly turned, toothsome bubblegum pop.”

‘Mikrokosmos’ is Roji’s recommended track, and she wrote that “the tender lyrics — that we shine in our own way, that we shine as we are — pat the hearts of people living through a complicated world, while granting each person their own difference”. NME’s Daly called it “a widescreen and glittering electronic pop beauty that takes its title from ancient Greek philosophy and the concept of each individual human being their own world”. Petridis placed it 19th and wrote that it “offers a brand of electronic pop that’s both melodically pretty and epic-sounding”.

Of the closing song ‘Dionysus’, Mimyo wrote that “against the other songs, which run catchily around a settled theme, this one lurches back and forth as full-blooded K-pop, and holds that much more interesting a place”. NME’s Daly called it “a vibrant party anthem” that “also compares the pursuit of intoxication with being a musician watched over by a critical world”, and wrote of ‘HOME’ that it mixes a classic, soulful R&B sound with modern production to describe the group’s fans as a refuge from the isolation of being a world-famous band.

Numbers

The label’s own distribution metadata prints the record as MAP OF THE SOUL : PERSONA, dated 12 April 2019. The English song titles come from the same place: ‘작은 것들을 위한 시’ is Boy With Luv and ‘소우주’ is Mikrokosmos. The album introduction says the opening ‘Intro : Persona’ is RM’s solo, built on a sample of the intro beat from 2014’s Skool Luv Affair.

What came after

The MAP OF THE SOUL sequence runs on into the fourth full-length album, MAP OF THE SOUL : 7, the following year, and five of this record’s songs open it. Before it came Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer’, eight months earlier, and before that Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’.
