QUINTESSENCE is Taeyang’s fourth full-length album, released on 18 May 2026 with ten tracks. The title track is ‘LIVE FAST DIE SLOW’. The Korea Times reported that it is his first full-length record since WHITE NIGHT in 2017. The album introduction says the record began from a long-standing question about what the essence of a thing is, and that it concentrates on the search rather than on settling an answer. The Kid LAROI features on ‘OPEN UP’, and The Korea Herald reported that two members of AllDay Project join him on ‘WOULD YOU’.
Quibi, writing for the K-pop criticism webzine Idology on 2 June 2026, called it in the weekly column “the album that shows the most pop-star side of Taeyang across his whole discography — twenty years since the group’s debut, sixteen since his own”. He wrote that “the second half, which Taeyang carries entirely on his own, draws the eye more than the first half with its heavyweight features placed here and there, and in the passage where ‘LOVE LIKE THIS’ turns into ‘YES’ there is even a glimpse of Craig David twenty-five years ago”.
In the same webzine’s monthly column, Erin wrote that “the electronic sound of ‘OPEN UP’, roughened and handled with a practised hand, and the electronic dance track ‘NOW’ show him breathing in step with the current trend”. She wrote that the album turns the assurance of a veteran approaching twenty years as a soloist into a contemporary idiom.
IZM’s Son Min-hyun wrote on 28 June that “set against earlier work that was achromatic, the primary-colour result drawn out this time is a bold and challenging change”. He read the middle of the album as the stretch led by the R&B vocalist Paul Blanco, and wrote that “an identity that is at once the Taeyang of BIGBANG and another thing, a soloist’s own, is proved once again”.
‘LIVE FAST DIE SLOW’ is the title track. IZM’s Im Dong-yeop wrote on 28 May that it “follows the shape of ‘Stay’ by The Kid LAROI, who takes part in this fourth album, starting calmly, riding a thick beat at a sprint and finishing the race with a Weeknd-style synthesiser at the end of the running time”, and that “the music and what it says reached agreement in the race”.
음악취향Y (Eumak Chwihyang Y), a Korean music webzine whose name reads as ‘musical taste Y’, took the same song up in Single-Out no. 603, the column in which several writers cover one new single together. Ryu Hyun-ji wrote that “the drums, bursting with impact throughout, push the song forward as if venting an overflow of energy, and Taeyang’s vocal too runs out in a straight line and adds a cool clarity”, and closed with a sentence: “Just hearing the moment when an artist who has come through a fairly long twenty years finally runs free, carrying those years on his back, is enough for the strength of it to come through.” Lee A-rim wrote that “as he has said it is the fastest BPM of anything he has released, the song runs, and it is bright and buoyant instead of lyrical”.
‘LOVE LIKE THIS’ and ‘YES’ are the two songs in the middle of the record. Son Min-hyun wrote that “on ‘Love like this’, where room to breathe has opened up, the craft of his vocal cords — his strength — comes back to life, and the light-footed vocal of ‘Yes’, with the unnecessary accompaniment taken out, shines alongside it”.
‘BAD’, which opens the album, and ‘G.O.A.T’, near the end, are the two Erin picked out together. She wrote that “‘BAD’, which opens the record, drives in short and hard with a strong vocal over a thick beat, and ‘LIVE FAST DIE SLOW’, a synth-pop track that recalls The Weeknd, stamps in his identity as a powerful vocalist with the weight of the vocal and a practised groove”, and that “‘LOVE LIKE THIS’, a typical R&B track with the familiar voice that comes to mind at the name Taeyang, and ‘G.O.A.T’, which leaves a deep resonance in a plain voice, carry the identity of his vocal and the depth behind it exactly as they are”.
Circle Chart placed the record at number 14 on its album chart for week 21 of 2026 (17 to 23 May), the week of release, and put that week’s sales at 40,720 copies. It was at number 22 the following week, week 22 (24 to 30 May).
On the digital chart, ‘LIVE FAST DIE SLOW’ entered at number 83 in week 21 and rose to number 50 in week 22.
