The record

WYLD is Taeyong’s first full-length album, released on 18 May 2026 with 10 tracks. The title track shares the record’s name. It follows the mini albums SHALALA of 2023 and TAP of 2024, and the single ‘Rock Solid (Feat. Anderson .Paak)’ of a month earlier.

The album introduction on Bugs states that he wrote the lyrics of every track, composed nine of them and took part in the producing throughout, and that the record follows about two years without a solo release. The same text describes the title track as hip-hop built from heavy bass, weighted rhythm instruments and experimental sources stacked for depth, with its idea taken from the instinctive movement of a wild animal. By that account ‘Storm’ is a hip-hop track that adds dubstep elements to an 808 bass and marching drums, ‘I’m a Dancing Cactus’ is house made from 1980s and 1990s synth sounds and a garage drum texture, and ‘Mermaid’ is alternative R&B that likens the fans who waited to mermaids. The introduction says that ‘Storm’, ‘Hypnotic’, ‘I’m a Dancing Cactus’, ‘Mermaid’, ‘404 Euphoria’, ‘Skiii’ and ‘Feeling Myself’ were first performed at the January 2026 concert ‘TY TRACK – REMASTERED’.

Reviews

Nam Kang-min of IZM read the album as a summing-up of ten years of work. He wrote that it is “wildness drawn in black and white, and where the ornament has been stripped away, a raw sense of things is what remains”, and pointed to the voice as the record’s central device: “more than the instruments bent in various ways, it is a voice combining character and range that leads the fullness of the sound.” Reading the flow of the album out of Taeyong’s years across several units, he wrote that “the sequence that carries through without strain is a product of the dimensionality gained from running many units as a platform rather than a fence”, and closed: “the vitality Taeyong has built whole, without separation, is solid.” IZM gave the album 83 points.

Idology (아이돌로지) ran the record in ‘Weekly’, its column on the records of the third and fourth weeks of May 2026. Quibi wrote that in an idol-pop cycle that has grown very fast, the comeback records of those returning from military service are a rare place where long-prepared work shows, and named this first full-length as that example. Of the range of the self-produced work, the interpolations of the parent group’s songs, the homage to earlier groups and the private reflection, he wrote that “one reads in it the deliberation of a solo singer thinking about where he stands, and one feels that Taeyong kept building through the years away”.

Clash ran a review by Maria Letícia L. Gomes and gave the album 8 out of 10. She wrote that “‘WYLD’ does not follow a prebuilt formula for evenly distributing genres and vibes throughout an album, instead allowing each track to innovate and deliver its own different feel”.

Billboard placed the album on its list of the 25 best K-pop albums of the first half of 2026, published on 20 July 2026. The entry says that on the record “heavy bass, marching percussion, dubstep and hyperpop lock together beneath a voice that slips freely between singing and rap”, and that “wildness is most compelling in the tension between aggression and the knowledge of restraint”, which this album “leaves taut”.

Among the tracks

Of the title track ‘WYLD’, Clash wrote that it “is full of growling vocals, heavy bass and an almost animalistic sense of momentum, balancing aggressive rap sections with a memorable chorus”. Billboard put the song on its list of the 25 best K-pop songs of the first half of 2026, published on 15 July 2026, writing that “the beat arrives fractured, with the bass settled firmly beneath it. Over that foundation, a compressed low-register rap and a high, airborne vocal take turns inhabiting the same body before the chorus releases them together.” Nam Kang-min noted that the song borrows ‘Neo got my back’, the intro of the group’s 2018 album, to call up that legacy.

Of ‘Storm’, Nam wrote that Taeyong “embodies the label’s own SMP elements single-handed and puts an unwavering capacity on show”, and Clash described the track as moving in “a colder direction, with an icy, metallic, almost industrial production feel at points”. Clash called ‘Mermaid’ “perhaps the project’s biggest surprise”, noting that his singing voice has rarely been as exposed or melodic, and wrote of the closing track ‘Run’ that “it feels warm, adaptably cutting through some of the colder experimentation TAEYONG is known for”.

Nam described the second half of the sequence: “once the front half, optimised for performance, is done, the jazz hip-hop of ‘Hypnotic’, ‘I’m a dancing cactus’ — which puts a house trend into the language of the 1990s — and the urbane R&B of ‘Mermaid’ follow in turn, giving off a wide range of digestion.” He added that “the variation of rap tone inside ‘Feeling myself’, which narrows the space built by hyperpop in an instant, is delicate too.” Quibi pointed to ‘404 Euphoria’ as the place of private reflection and ‘Hot’ as the homage to earlier groups, and Clash read ‘Hot’ as leaning “into old-school hip-hop textures with a looser, cooler energy”.
