How 'Perfect Crown' Became Disney+'s Biggest K-drama Ever

What happened

Perfect Crown (Korean title 21세기 대군부인, ‘21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife’) ended its run on MBC on 16 May 2026. According to Nielsen Korea figures reported by Soompi, the final episode averaged 13.8% nationwide, the highest rating of the drama’s entire run and the most-watched programme of any kind on Korean television that Saturday. The Korea Herald put episode 11 — which aired the previous night, Friday 15 May — at 13.5%, so the finale added 0.3 percentage points on the day before.

The series had premiered on Friday 10 April 2026 at 9:40 p.m. in MBC’s Friday–Saturday prime-time slot, with Disney+ as its exclusive streamer in Korea and its platform internationally (Hulu in the United States); the run was twelve episodes. On 15 May, the day before the finale, Disney+ announced that Perfect Crown had become its most-watched Korean title worldwide during its first 28 days of release, and Deadline reported the same day that the drama had driven more than 43 million hours viewed globally across Disney+ and Hulu since its premiere.

Why is it trending?

The Disney+ record was set early and then kept growing. On 16 April, Disney+ announced that Perfect Crown had achieved the platform’s biggest-ever viewership for a Korean series within five days of its 10 April launch; it declined to release figures, saying only that the show was the most-viewed Korean series premiere on the platform globally. The Hollywood Reporter reported that the series entered Disney+’s Global Top 10 within days and trended in more than 40 countries.

The second set of numbers came a month later. Deadline reported on 15 May that seven-day views for episode 8 were 43% higher than for the premiere and that on seven-day data the series was the top Korean title of all time globally on Disney+ and Hulu. Deadline also reported that Disney called it the ‘most globally traveled Korean premiere on Disney+ to date’ on 28 days of views: number one in the United States and Canada, EMEA and Latin America, and in Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan.

The pairing explains much of the anticipation. IU came to the project from Netflix’s When Life Gives You Tangerines, which won best drama at the 2025 Baeksang Arts Awards, and Byeon Woo-seok was returning to television two years after tvN’s Lovely Runner (2024); the two had previously shared the screen in SBS’s Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016). Director Park Joon-hwa (What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, Alchemy of Souls) and writer Yoo Ji-won made it, and MBC presented it at a press conference at Josun Palace in Gangnam on 6 April as the network’s next big royal romance after its 2006 hit Princess Hours. IU introduced her character as ‘a woman who has everything but the official title to match’.

The final week also brought a historical-accuracy controversy. After the coronation scene in the 15 May episode — in which Grand Prince I-an wears a Guryu Myeonryugwan crown while officials chant ‘Cheonse’, elements that viewers said resembled the protocols of a tributary state rather than an independent kingdom — the production team posted an apology on the drama’s official website on 16 May, said it had failed to fully examine how Joseon court rituals evolved, and promised to revise the relevant audio and subtitles for rebroadcasts, video-on-demand and streaming. The Korea Times reported on 20 May that IU and Byeon Woo-seok had also posted apologies on their personal social media accounts and that Park Joon-hwa addressed the criticism in a post-finale interview on 19 May.
