Red Velvet's 'Velvet Summer': Two-Year Comeback Explained

What happened

Red Velvet released Velvet Summer, a five-track mini album, at 6 p.m. KST on Monday 3 August 2026, with ‘Surfin’ Boy’ as its title track. It is the group’s first full-group release in more than two years: the previous one was Cosmic, the tenth-anniversary mini album of June 2024. The ‘Surfin’ Boy’ music video went up on SM Entertainment’s SMTOWN YouTube channel the same day.

The comeback surfaced as a report before it was an announcement. On 11 June 2026 Sports Chosun said the group was preparing an album for August, and SM Entertainment confirmed it the same day: ‘Red Velvet is preparing for a full-group comeback with the aim of returning in August.’ On Sunday 14 June the company announced ‘2026 Red Velvet FAN-CON: A Day in Red & Velvet’ at Korea University’s Hwajeong Gymnasium for 1 and 2 August, the first night falling on the group’s 12th debut anniversary. The Korea Times reported the plan on 16 June, with fan-club presales from 17 June and general sales from 23 June.

The fan concert grew from the two days SM had planned to three: the original 1 and 2 August shows sold out on fan-club presale alone, so SM added a show for 31 July, and TenAsia reported on 16 July that the added show sold out too, leaving all three Seoul performances sold out. The run took place from Friday 31 July to Sunday 2 August, and The Korea Times reported it sold out as well. The group performed ‘Surfin’ Boy’ and the B-side ‘Hula Hoop’ there for the first time, in a set that also included ‘Dumb Dumb’, ‘Bad Boy’, ‘Psycho’, ‘Blue Lemonade’ and ‘Hit That Drum’.

Why is it trending?

The gap is the story. Between Cosmic and Velvet Summer the five members worked separately: Wendy released her third solo EP Cerulean Verge in 2025, Yeri acted in film and television, and Irene was in the middle of her first solo Asia tour, ‘I-Will’, when the comeback was reported in June 2026. In 2025 Wendy and Yeri also ended their exclusive contracts with SM Entertainment and signed with other agencies, which is why press described Velvet Summer as the first all-member release since the group stopped sharing a single label. Cosmic topped the iTunes Top Albums chart in 50 regions and NME named its title track one of the 25 best K-pop songs of 2024.

The sound is a deliberate turn from the group’s summer catalogue. ‘Surfin’ Boy’ mixes bossa nova and reggae elements with, in The Korea Herald’s words, ‘a pinch of mystery and darkness’, and Joy wrote the lyrics on her own. Seulgi told The Korea Times that the group’s past summer songs were ‘intense and full of energy’ but that this one captured ‘a more “velvety” summer mood’; Wendy described the album as ‘that languid, mature summer sensibility’.

The first charts arrived overnight. By the morning of 4 August KST, Soompi counted Velvet Summer at number one on iTunes Top Albums charts in at least 15 regions — Denmark, Sweden, Chile, Peru, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey, Paraguay, Cambodia and the Philippines — and in the top ten in at least 28, including the United States, France, Japan, Mexico and the Netherlands. SM Entertainment put the figure at 15 regions on 4 August, The Korea Herald reported, adding that all five tracks had entered major Korean charts. The album also topped QQ Music’s and KuGou Music’s digital album sales charts in China. ‘Surfin’ Boy’ reached number one on Bugs’ real-time chart at 10 a.m. KST on 4 August. On 12 August the song took its first music-show trophy on ‘Show Champion’. The other first-place candidates were fromis_9’s ‘Vitamin ME’, KISS OF LIFE’s ‘SWEAT’, Stray Kids’ ‘This & That’ and Jennie’s ‘Less than a Lover’.
