The record
DRIP is BABYMONSTER’s first full-length album, released on 1 November 2024 with nine tracks. ‘CLIK CLAK’ and ‘DRIP’ are both title tracks. The summer single ‘FOREVER’ of that July is carried on it, and a remix of ‘BATTER UP’, until then performed only on stage, closes the record as a bonus track.
YG Entertainment’s album introduction on Bugs places the album after the first mini album BABYMONS7ER as the group’s first full-length record, and describes the title track ‘DRIP’ as “an EDM-based hip-hop dance song built on a dynamic beat and a range of bass sounds”. The same text calls the other title track, ‘CLIK CLAK’, “a minimal track in a savage mood, with the low and high registers both emphasised”, and says it is the first song on which every member raps.
Reviews
Jung Ki-yeop of IZM reviewed the album on 26 November 2024. He began with the breadth of the credits, writing that “an album that has mobilised every generation of YG musicians attests to the expectations placed on the label’s youngest group”, and that “because YG’s veterans have gathered, the label’s own hip-hop, R&B and EDM colours are strong. This one record is enough to span the label’s several decades.” Of the two title tracks he wrote that they “went to combinations where a distinct YG self and BABYMONSTER’s ability to carry it meet in equal measure”.
Among the tracks
Of ‘CLIK CLAK’, Jung wrote that “‘Click clack’, made by producers who know hip-hop’s own swagger, shows the outstanding skill of every member”, and of ‘DRIP’ that “‘Drip’, which puts confidence on show, wields a spirited flair over the electronic dance music the group handles best”. The spelling of both song titles inside those sentences is his own.
The same review singled out two more tracks: “‘Really like you’, which lays singing effectively between old-school hip-hop, and ‘Billionaire’, whose falsetto inside Latin pop is appealing, place the vocal and rap members exactly where they belong and boast a high level of finish.”
The album introduction describes ‘BILLIONAIRE’ as “a reinterpretation of Y2K pop R&B” carrying the attitude that money cannot price a person’s worth, and ‘Really Like You’ as “a song in the style of 1990s golden-era hip-hop R&B”. ‘Woke Up In Tokyo (RUKA & ASA)’, the first unit song by the rappers Ruka and Asa, moves freely between Japanese and English lyrics with wordplay built on onomatopoeia, the same text says.
Numbers
On Circle Chart’s monthly album chart for November 2024 the record placed sixth and eighth in its two editions. The chart counted 486,841 copies for the one and 312,534 for the other that month.
