The record

HAPPY BURSTDAY is SEVENTEEN’s fifth full-length album, released on 26 May 2025 — the tenth anniversary of their debut. It carries seventeen tracks and the title track is ‘THUNDER’. Three group songs are joined by one solo song for each of the thirteen members.

The album introduction on Bugs explains that the title joins the English birthday greeting to the word “burst”, marking both a rebirth won through challenge and the sense of new possibility breaking open. The same text says a solo song from every member on one album is a first in the group’s ten years, and credits Pharrell Williams with the group song ‘Bad Influence’ and Timbaland with Hoshi’s ‘Damage’. ‘THUNDER’ is described there as EDM-based dance pop.

Reviews

Clash reviewed the album on the day of release: “On the tenth anniversary of their existence as a group, SEVENTEEN blows out the candles of a decade with the fierce gust of a hurricane.” Of the title the same piece wrote that “the name itself reveals the spirit of the project”, joining the birthday greeting to “burst” to express the energy of the group’s rebirth.

NME’s Gladys Yeo reviewed it the same day. She wrote that “SEVENTEEN making it to their 10th anniversary is certainly an impressive feat worth celebrating – it’s hard for pop groups to come this far, especially with their entire line-up intact”, and that the record “is not only a present to their fans, but a stepping stone between the past and future, celebrating their growth over the past decade and the transformation that’s yet to come”.

Among the tracks

Both outlets take up the three group songs that open the record. NME wrote: “There’s the explosive opener ‘HBD’, a high-octane pop-punk track – armed with a heart-thumping drum beat and a guitar-led chorus – that immediately commands attention. Keeping up the momentum are the sizzling, pulsating beats of lead single ‘Thunder’, a club-ready banger that dives headfirst into the carefree nostalgia of late-noughties EDM and house-led pop music, and the sensual, Pharrell-produced ‘Bad Influence’.” Clash also opens with ‘HBD’, “with thunderous drums and blazing guitar riffs that feel like they’re erupting from a stage on fire”, and says of ‘Bad Influence’ that it “seduces with smooth tones and refined pop groove, proving that growing up can also mean slow dancing with chaos”.

Among the thirteen solo songs, the two both outlets pick out are Hoshi’s ‘Damage’ and Mingyu’s ‘Shake It Off’. Clash calls ‘Damage’ “a nocturnal dive into heavy beats, produced by Timbaland, where the body dances before the mind even understands why”. NME wrote: “Then there’s the confident, strutting tech-house of Mingyu’s ‘Shake It Off’, his nonchalant sing-rap vocals and animalistic, dirty deep bass – another scene stealer on the record.”

Clash gathers the rest into one paragraph. It writes that “‘Coincidence’ by Jeonghan, ‘Happy Virus’ by DK, and ‘Destiny’ by Woozi showcase familiar, heartfelt sides of the artists”, that “Jun and The8 dazzle in their ethereal worlds with ‘Gemini’ and ‘Skyfall’ – tracks that dance delicately on the tightrope between dream and desire – while Seungkwan moves with the ballad ‘Raindrops’”, and that “Dino is addictively bold on ‘Trigger’, Mingyu turns ‘Shake It Off’ into a swaggering parade of dirty bass, and Joshua and Wonwoo put their vocals to work on ‘Fortunate Change’ and ‘99.9%’”. Of the leader’s track: “In ‘Jungle’, S.Coups delivers his domain: gritty, addictive hip-hop – like the leadership that’s carried him for ten years.” NME closes the same ground: “Other standouts see the members playing to their tried-and-tested strengths, whether it’s Seungkwan’s stirring rock ballad ‘Raindrops’ or the energetic synth-infused pop-punk of Vernon’s ‘Shining Star’.”

Numbers

Herald Business, citing the Hanteo Chart, reported that the album sold 2,521,208 copies in its first week, the counting period running from 26 May to 1 June 2025. The same report called it the highest first week for any K-pop album that year, and said the title track ‘THUNDER’ reached number one on Melon’s Top 100 and settled near the top after that.

By Billboard’s own chart history the album entered the Billboard 200 dated 14 June 2025 at number two.
