SPILL THE FEELS

The record

SPILL THE FEELS is SEVENTEEN’s twelfth mini album, released on 14 October 2024 with six tracks. The title track is ‘LOVE, MONEY, FAME’, with DJ Khaled. It came half a year after the compilation 17 IS RIGHT HERE in April.

The album introduction on Bugs says the title means to pour out honestly the feelings one has told no one, and that it is also an anagram of the sentence “I FELT HELPLESS”. The same text describes the title track as an R&B and hip-hop track carried by a groovy melody, notes that the opening ‘Eyes on you’ was made with the British DJ and producer Shift K3y, and names the unit songs: ‘Candy’ for the vocal unit, ‘Rain’ for the performance unit and ‘Water’ for the hip-hop unit.

Reviews

NME’s Rhian Daly reviewed the record on the day of release. She wrote that “‘Spill The Feels’ marks SEVENTEEN’s first release of their 10th year and a new era for the group that’s already seen them perform the biggest shows of their career and break new boundaries for themselves and K-pop as a whole”, and closed: “But, while it packs the excitement of something fresh and in constant evolution, most importantly, it doesn’t deviate from the very core of what makes SEVENTEEN them – an unwavering commitment to spreading hope, joy and love, all via addictive and affecting music.”

Clash, two days later, wrote that “‘SPILL THE FEELS’ is an impressive showcase of Seventeen’s musical maturity, skillfully balancing elements of traditional K-pop with bold experimentation and heartfelt, sincere lyrics”, and that “known for their ability to produce and choreograph their own work, Seventeen proves once again why they are considered a creative force within the K-pop industry”.

Among the tracks

Both outlets take up the opening ‘Eyes on you’. Clash wrote that “the opening track, ‘Eyes On You,’ stands out as a powerful and emotionally charged beginning”, and said its chorus bridges the wish to connect and the vulnerability of opening up completely. NME treats it as a bouncing house collaboration with Shift K3y, a song seeking to grow something lasting out of open and honest talk that does not gloss over pain.

‘1 TO 13’ and ‘Candy’ are NME’s. “It’s most obvious on ‘1 To 13’, a bright piece of Miami bass that takes moments from their past,” she wrote of the record’s habit of looking back with a purpose. Of the vocal unit’s track: “‘Candy’, meanwhile, a beautiful, twinkling ballad delivered by the vocal unit of DK, Seungkwan, Joshua, Woozi and Jeonghan, is gently defiant.”

Clash reads the last two songs against each other. “In ‘Rain,’ the tone of the album shifts completely, introducing a deep reflection on loneliness and emotional alienation,” it wrote, and of the closer: “Closing the album, ‘Water’ is a dynamic track that, in contrast to ‘Rain,’ speaks of strength and overcoming challenges.” The piece ends by saying that “the cohesion between the themes of each song showcases the group’s growth, both lyrically and musically”.

Numbers

The Electronic Times, citing Hanteo Chart figures released by Pledis Entertainment, reported first-week sales of 3,160,611 copies. The same report called it the highest first week of any K-pop album released in 2024 and the only triple-million first week that year, and noted the run of versions that followed the title track — an English version, a sped-up version and remixes by Hitchhiker and TAK.

By Billboard’s own chart history the album entered the Billboard 200 dated 2 November 2024 at number five.
