The record

SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN is SEVENTEEN’s eleventh mini album, released on 23 October 2023 with eight tracks. The title track is ‘God of Music’. It followed FML by six months.

The album introduction on Bugs explains that the title turns the English phrase “seventh heaven” into the group’s own, and names the moment of happiness felt together at the end of a long journey of challenge and discovery. The same text says the title is also the name of a festival celebrating what SEVENTEEN and CARAT have built, notes that Marshmello produced the opening ‘SOS’, and lists the unit songs: ‘Monster’ for the hip-hop unit, ‘Back 2 Back’ for the performance unit and ‘Yawn’ for the vocal unit. ‘Diamond Days’ and ‘Headliner’ are described there as songs for the fandom.

Reviews

NME’s Abby Webster reviewed the record four days after release. She began with the group’s concerts — “with 13 multi-hyphenate members and prismatic sound, every one of their concerts is its own mini-festival” — and wrote of the album: “Channelling those celebratory moments on stage, their ecstatic 11th mini-album ‘Seventeeth Heaven’ scales up their sound to match their latest run of stadium tours (and Coachella hopes) across its short stretch.”

Of the title track the same review says: “That’s why, as pompous as the title of ‘God of Music’ may sound, the actual single – riding high on euphoric brass and funk – is anything but.” After quoting Joshua’s opening line of thanks she added: “They’re just thrilled to be here, doing what they love most.”

Among the tracks

The track NME gives most space to is the vocal unit’s ‘Yawn’. She wrote that “every setlist has its energetic lows, and in gorgeous piano ballad ‘Yawn’, contemplations of fleeting relationships are etched with grief”, and of its bridge that it “is a slow exhale, all leisurely sighs and instrumental swells that tug the heartstrings”.

The hip-hop unit’s ‘Monster’ is treated as a nocturnal trap track that pulls up and screeches off in under three minutes. “But even as they namecheck Dracula and Frankenstein,” the review says, “the rappers’ hotshot bravado and its sneering chorus make for an absolutely head-bopping listen.” ‘Diamond Days’ is described as a rave-ready EDM redux of the early song ‘Shining Diamond’.

Of the closing ‘Headliner’ she wrote: “Rounding things off is ‘Headliner’, which leaves us with the crackling anticipation of standing on music festival green when the sun begins to set.” And: “It’s the type of song tailor-made for an encore’s cathartic cry: a memento you can tuck away in your pocket and hold close forever.”

Numbers

Sports Khan reported that the record passed 5.2 million pre-orders before release and 5.09 million copies in its first week, setting the highest first-week figure any K-pop album had recorded. By the same report the title track went to number one on the Melon, Genie and Bugs charts immediately after release, and won four times on music shows up to 4 November without the group appearing on them. The same piece put SEVENTEEN’s Korean album sales for 2023 at over 11.04 million copies.

By Billboard’s own chart history the album entered the Billboard 200 dated 11 November 2023 at number two, the same position FML had reached six months earlier.
