Heavy Serenade

The record

Heavy Serenade is NMIXX’s fifth mini album, released on 11 May 2026 with six tracks and a title track of the same name. It followed the first full-length album, Blue Valentine, by seven months.

JYP Entertainment’s album introduction describes the title track as one that mixes raw elements — trance, acid, drum and bass — into finely made pop, and says the artist HANRORO took part in writing the lyric, which speaks of a love held with certainty. iMBC reported that Lily shares the lyric credit on ‘Crescendo’ and ‘IDESERVEIT’ and wrote ‘LOUD’ alone, while Bae is credited on ‘Different Girl’ and ‘Superior’.

MusicY ran the title track on its Single-Out page of 25 May 2026, with four writers filing an entry each. Kim Seong-hwan described the song’s design: “It keeps to a strategy of putting a chorus melodic enough to lodge firmly in the listener’s mind at the centre, and mixing changes of beat and sound through the rest of the song’s rise and fall.” He set it beside the previous album: “Where ‘Blue Valentine’ used a change of BPM, this song places the strong and weak of a trance-like beat and the dreamlike and the direct side by side in its arrangement, and attempts a new musical mixing.” And: “Above all, because the members’ voices divide softness and power to match the strong and weak of that beat and sound, and carry the plan out faithfully, this heavy serenade closes every seam.”

Kim Yu-yeong, on the same page, read the arrangement and the lyric together. “The many layers of synth lift the dreamlike mood and the sense of space, and the rough-textured electronic sound that cuts in without warning builds an energy that seems about to burst,” she wrote, and of the lyric: “HANRORO’s words, which you want to chew over as you would a poem, fit the voices of NMIXX — who have travelled in search of their own world — as well as anything could.” Her entry closes: “It is a fine piece of pop in which varied genre elements — trance, acid house, drum and bass, rock — an arresting lyric and faultless singing all come together.”

Yu Seong-eun began on the distance between the title and the song: “It wears a heavy outer coat of feeling, as the title says, but inside it is full of the warmth of a soft, tender love.” Of the way the voices stack she wrote that “this is not a song that simply shows off high notes; several tones overlap to raise the density of the feeling, and towards the end the song itself sweeps in like one enormous wave”, and of the sound: “On top of that, a strong distortion is laid over part of the sound in the build, making for a moment a blurred, rough texture close to shoegaze.” Jang Yeong-jae took the bridge as the song’s high point — “The melody that ends the bridge on voices alone then announces another beginning and opens a fairly dramatic moment of catharsis” — and closed his entry: “Drawing a deep resonance of feeling out of a single song, and hearing a hidden genre element in every scene, is becoming the identity NMIXX lead with in idol pop.”

Idology carried the record in its page on the new releases of the second week of May 2026, published on 1 June. Quibi, who wrote the entry, described the title track as “a song that drives straight through the swelling wave of sound on a melody that stretches out with certainty, with strong voices carrying a love song of conviction with weight”. He heard ‘Crescendo’ and ‘Different Girl’ as tracks that “draw the helpless, irresistible chaos of love”.

Among the tracks

The track all five writers named is the title track, ‘Heavy Serenade’. The album introduction says its cinematic drums and modal interchange chord progression make its mysterious air and that the last chorus turns to rock with force behind it; Kim Yu-yeong pointed to HANRORO’s lyric, and Jang Yeong-jae to the bridge that ends on voices alone.

The tracks Quibi named alongside it are the opening ‘Crescendo’ and the fourth track, ‘Different Girl’. By the album introduction ‘Crescendo’ is an alternative-pop song whose intro music box returns in the outro, and ‘Different Girl’ a future-bass song built on trap drums, an R&B chord progression and dreamlike synths.

The closing track, ‘LOUD’, is the one Lily wrote alone. The album introduction calls it a pop song mixing drum and bass with a Jersey club beat, and names the layered vocal harmony in its chorus.

Numbers

On Circle Chart’s weekly album chart the record entered at number one in week 20 of 2026, the week of release (10 to 16 May), with 279,657 copies sold that week. A separate POCA edition entered the same week’s chart at number five with 89,900. On the monthly count it was number ten for May 2026, with 281,453.

‘Heavy Serenade’ entered Circle Chart’s weekly digital chart at number 12 in week 20 and rose to number eight in weeks 21 (17 to 23 May) and 22. It was still at number 19 in week 31, in early August. The opening track ‘Crescendo’ was at number 154 in the week of release.
