Seven (feat. Latto)

The song

‘Seven (feat. Latto)’ is Jung Kook’s first official solo single, released on 14 July 2023. The album information page lists one track, ‘Seven (feat. Latto) - Clean Ver.’, and the song was carried onto the full-length album GOLDEN four months later.

The album introduction on Bugs says Jung Kook had until then given away Still With You and My You as free releases, and that this single opens his solo work proper. The same text describes an addictive melody set against a warm-sounding acoustic guitar and a UK garage rhythm, and calls it a summer song whose lyric is about wanting to spend a whole week with the person you love. Andrew Watt and Cirkut worked on the song, and Latto is the featured artist. The music video went up on the HYBE LABELS channel on the day of release.

Reviews

IZM’s Lee Seung-won opened his single review of July 2023 with the sentence “‘Seven’ is different.” He wrote that the song, “taking an extreme pop route, meets the expectation his ability as a main vocalist and his particular sweetness of tone had raised, and dispels the worry about whether he could show a point of difference from his group”.

That December the same outlet placed the song among its ten Korean singles of 2023. Jang Jun-hwan opened the entry on “the soft strings and the light two-step rhythm, and over them the vocal that reads out the days of the week calmly and settles freshly on top”, and wrote that “it takes up the vibe-leaning current that Harry Styles and Steve Lacy led last year and presents a cutting-edge, sugar-free sound you could play all day without tiring of it”. He wrote that “the clear melody that makes you hum and the restrained performance also spur it on”, and closed: “Anyone who wants orthodox pop has one more textbook to consult.”

NME’s Rhian Daly gave the song four stars out of five and placed it in the second revival of the UK garage that went mainstream around the turn of the millennium. She wrote that “where on previous releases, his acclaimed vocals have complemented and matched the music he was singing over, here opposites attract”, and that “it’s a combination that works brilliantly”. The same piece traces the resemblance to Craig David’s ‘7 Days’ and finds that the listing of the days reads less as a recital of one week than as a commitment to cycling through the calendar together forever.

The Singles Jukebox gave the song a page on 5 December 2023, with signed blurbs and scores out of ten from fifteen writers. Anna Suiter gave it 8 and wrote: “‘Seven’ is all about Jung Kook, Latto, and whoever he’s talking to, though, and that’s way better.”

The Guardian’s Michael Cragg, reviewing GOLDEN in November 2023, named this song as the US chart-topping single the album carried, and a song built on UK garage.

What else is on it

The label’s own distribution metadata prints the single as Seven and lists an instrumental and a run of remixes as separate releases beside it — a band version and a summer mix on 17 July, festival, island, lo-fi and nightfall mixes on 21 July, an Alesso remix in August and a David Guetta remix in October. On GOLDEN the song appears twice, as the third track and as the last, in two different versions.

Numbers

IZM’s Jang Jun-hwan wrote that the song came through the heat of high summer to settle at the top of the Billboard chart. The same outlet placed it among its ten Korean singles of 2023.

What came after

Jung Kook’s next single is 3D (feat. Jack Harlow), two and a half months later on 29 September 2023, and after that the full-length album GOLDEN on 3 November. The fan song Never Let Go followed in June 2024.
