‘Black Mamba’ is aespa’s debut single, released on 17 November 2020. It is the first record the group put out; ‘Next Level’ followed six months later, and the first mini-album Savage in October 2021.
SM Entertainment’s album introduction describes it as a dance track built on the group’s signature synth sound and a heavy bass. The same text says the lyrics follow the members as they learn that the thing blocking their connection with their ‘ae’ avatars is called Black Mamba, and go after it.
The music video went up on the official SMTOWN channel the same day.
Idology (아이돌로지), a Korean webzine covering idol pop, named aespa one of the seven rookie acts of 2020 on 29 December that year. The list was voted on by eight of its writers, and each act carries two signed notes.
Sseodeu began with where the debut song’s lyrics sit. Even for a company that always tries an unusual concept, he wrote, this was a very unusual debut single: not a song about love or friendship, and not the self-examination or social commentary of SM’s own SMP tradition either, but a lyric written entirely outside the frame of a pop song. Those words, he added, mean something only inside aespa’s own universe and storyline — a song that is, in video-game terms, an opening sequence and a tutorial stage at once.
The same note read the choreography through the size of the group. Its performance keeps changes of formation to a minimum and cuts to the beat in unison, Sseodeu wrote, which suits a four-piece, and the arrangement hands the spotlight evenly to each member part by part.
On the same page Sskwib placed the group at the point where SM Entertainment rebuilt one of its own older forms. The way the songs and the stages fire off arresting images without pause, he wrote, chimes with a social-media presence that moves easily across TikTok, Twitter, Instagram and the fan cafe and calls up a new-generation sensibility — but the grand ambition at the centre, and the discipline that carries it, marks aespa out as the direct heir of classic SMP. There was a reason, the same writer added, that Winter singing “에스파는 나야 둘이 될 수 없어” became one of the year’s most-quoted K-pop memes.
Idology placed the song’s music video in the ‘Universe’ group of its ‘결산 2020 : ④올해의 뮤직비디오 Playlists’ on 16 January 2021 — the section collecting the year’s videos in which a fictional world and its story stood out.
