The song

‘ExtraL’ is a single Jennie released on 21 February 2025 with the American rapper Doechii. Two weeks later it became the sixth track of her first album, Ruby, and it was the third song released ahead of that record, after Mantra and Love Hangover.

IZM’s Jung Ki-yeop read the song, in his Ruby review, as part of the album’s through-line: the J stamped again and again orbits like the moon into an L that grows self-reliance, he wrote, and ‘ExtraL’ holds the same theme as the rest. Of the pairing with Doechii — who had just won the Grammy for best rap album — he wrote that the two carry the plain swagger particular to hip-hop over a fast beat that climbs to 140 BPM. Of the album’s collaborations generally he added that nobody’s presence is allowed to shrink, and that they mix as harmoniously as a single team.

Clash’s Maria Letícia L. Gomes made the song her example of how a guest verse should work. “Now this is how you do a feature,” she wrote, and: “Doechii’s high-speed verse is electric, pushing Jennie to match her energy.” On the arrangement: “The production is tight – stuttering hi-hats, aggressive bass, and a distorted vocal loop that runs through the background, creating an almost chaotic energy.” Her passage ends: “It’s one of the collaborations where Jennie doesn’t fade into the background – she holds her own and thrives, with a perfectly fitting partner.”

Rolling Stone’s Maura Johnston, writing about the album in the same week, called the track “the boastful collaboration with fast-talking Floridian Doechii”.

Numbers

YTN reported that three songs from Ruby entered the UK’s Official Singles Chart together after the album’s release: ‘like JENNIE’ at 36, ‘Handlebars’ at 41 and ‘ExtraL’ at 66.
