The song

‘Rockstar’ is a single Lisa released on 27 June 2024, the first she made after founding her own company LLOUD and partnering with RCA Records. It was carried again the following year as the second track of her first album, Alter Ego. NME’s review reports that the instrumental was co-produced by Ryan Tedder and samples Tame Impala’s ‘New Person, Same Old Mistakes’, and that one of the busiest streets in Bangkok was shut down to film the music video.

Reviews

IZM’s Park Soo-jin reviewed the song two weeks after release. She wrote that although the title puts ‘Rockstar’ up front, the song is closer to a hip-hop fighter than to a rock star, and that the money swagger of the earlier solo work — ‘Money’, ‘Lalisa’ — and the confident, powerful image it carried are spread across this one. Of the music video she wrote that the standout solo dance and the performance with a mega crew take hold of the song, and that shooting on the streets of Bangkok puts her own identity on screen without hedging. Her review closes: this is a single that clearly reached wider and went further, connecting boldly to the earlier Lisa while setting out her own worth in sharp outline.

NME’s Puah Ziwei, writing the day after release, led on the arrangement. “The intriguing Ryan Tedder co-produced instrumental, which samples Tame Impala’s sublime ‘New Person, Same Old Mistakes’, demands attention from the off,” the review says, and it credits the song with “her unique magnetism, elevating it beyond any of her solo work thus far”.

Numbers

Newsis gathered the song’s placings in an August 2024 report on Lisa’s next single. By that account ‘Rockstar’ opened at number eight on the Spotify global chart and number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached number four on the Billboard Global 200, number one on Billboard Global Excl. U.S. and number one on the YouTube Music global weekly chart. The same report listed four nominations at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards: best choreography, best art direction, best editing and best K-pop. Bridge Economy wrote in February 2025 that Lisa won best K-pop at that ceremony with the song, and that its music video had passed 260 million views.
