The record
Tonight is BIGBANG’s fourth mini album, released on 24 February 2011 with six tracks. The title track is ‘Tonight’. YG Entertainment’s album introduction presents it as the record the members made as a group again after two years of solo work, and ETNews, in its report on the day, called it a comeback after two years and three months.
Among the tracks
By the credits, G-Dragon took part in the lyrics and music of all six songs, and T.O.P is among the lyricists on the five other than ‘Intro (Thank You & You)’. The title track ‘Tonight’ was composed by G-Dragon, P.K (FearGOD) and KUSH, and arranged by P.K (FearGOD). In its 2020 selection of 50 BIGBANG tracks, The Korea Herald described it as the single that saw the group return to the South Korean music scene as a whole after nearly two years of solo work and a focus on Japan.
The same piece notes that ‘Hands Up’, composed by G-Dragon and KUSH, was first released on the Japanese single ‘Tell Me Goodbye’. The closing track, ‘Cafe’, was composed by DJ MURF and PEEJAY with G-Dragon, and The Korea Herald wrote that the groovy track “with subtle sax riffs brings you straight to a café”, just as its title says.
Numbers
Citing Mnet’s real-time chart, ETNews reported on 24 February 2011 that once the songs went up at midnight, all six — ‘Tonight’, ‘Somebody To Love’, ‘Hands Up’, ‘Cafe’ and ‘Intro’ among them — took places one to six. The same report says visits to the YG blog where the ‘Tonight’ teaser went up ran at more than 30 times the usual rate, bringing the server down for a while.
Afterwards
Fifteen years later ‘Hands Up’ and ‘Tonight’ were back at the top of the show. The Korea Times reported that the 23 August 2026 show of the 20th-anniversary world tour XX : COSMOS at Goyang Stadium opened with a run of ‘Hands Up’, ‘Tonight’, ‘LOSER’, ‘BLUE’ and ‘BAE BAE’. The tour and the anniversary single are covered in the story on BIGBANG’s 20th-anniversary single and world tour.
