Reviews
Idology (아이돌로지) carried the record in ‘1st Listen’, its round-up of new releases from mid-July 2018, as short pieces by three critics. Mano described the record in colour. He wrote that “a clean, airy quality like a pastel blue turned down a tone is laid under the whole album like a ground colour, and on top of it genres and units of quite different hue and saturation are set out in a row, and the joins and the finishing and everything about it are smooth and natural”. He called it “a record you can enjoy with an easy mind throughout, as though it held soft, cool air”, and wrote that SEVENTEEN “persuade you freshly, in their own way, of why they had to come back to the starting point of clean and airy”.
Seodeu wrote of the title track that it is “somehow like a musical, somehow like a scene from a film about youth, exactly the sort of song that makes you feel, while it is playing, that there is no such thing as care in the world”. Yu Je-sang wrote that “the title song ‘Oh My!’ sits in the line of the ‘bright beat plus downcast lyric’ they have kept showing, but it could not be more popular and the lyric’s appeal is not small either”.
IZM’s Park Su-jin opened her single review of the title track: “Cool as a midsummer smoothie.” She wrote that “the airy synthesiser sound and the lyric — ‘I miss you even while I’m looking at you’, so what am I to do — catch the ear easily”, and that “a killing point you can hum at the right moment, the members’ timbres joined smoothly without a rough patch, and the sound balance put a lightness into the song”.
Among the tracks
‘Oh My!’ is the song The Korea Herald’s Kwon Yae-rim placed ninth when she ranked SEVENTEEN’s thirty best songs in July 2020. She wrote that “this bright summer track shows the bandmates’ multifaceted talents”, from the peppy vocals of the group’s singers to the deep tones of its rappers.
Mano picked out three unit songs. He described the vocal unit’s ‘Come To Me’ as holding “the fresh air of a morning”, the hip-hop unit’s ‘What’s Good’ as “striding brightly down a midday street with a cold drink in one hand”, and the performance unit’s ‘Moonwalker’ as “like a summer night whose heat has broken”, writing that “unit songs coexisting in harmony press home the point that this is one album”. Of the closing ‘Our Dawn Is Hotter Than Day’ he wrote that it draws “a scene of watching the sun rise faintly over the horizon arm in arm”, and added: “don’t miss it either.”
