Who is V?
V is a member of BTS, which debuted with all seven members on 13 June 2013. The official site gives his birthday as 30 December 1995.
The first singles
The first songs under his own name were one-song singles: ‘Scenery’ on 30 January 2019, ‘Winter Bear’ on 10 August the same year, and ‘Snow Flower (feat. Peakboy)’ on 25 December 2020. The videos for ‘Winter Bear’ and ‘Snow Flower’ both went up on the BANGTANTV channel the day before release.
Layover
His first solo mini album, Layover, came out on 8 September 2023 with six songs, led by ‘Slow Dancing’. The album notes say it is the first solo album V has put out under his own name and is built on pop R&B, and describe the closing ‘Slow Dancing (Piano Ver.)’ as a piano version of the title track and a bonus track.
On 29 December 2023 Billboard placed Layover at number two in its 25 best K-pop albums of 2023. In that entry Billboard’s Jeff Benjamin wrote that the album draws on V’s ingrained love of jazz — he played saxophone in his childhood — and that it stands apart from any BTS album, presenting the singer in a realm all his own. The Korea Herald, too, recorded in its piece on the group’s first 13 years that he released Layover in 2023.
Two singles in 2024
The digital single ‘FRI(END)S’, released on 15 March 2024, carries four tracks: the original, an instrumental, and sped-up and slowed-down versions. The album notes introduce it as a pop-soul R&B confession song about wanting to end a friendship and move beyond it, and say the title, with ‘END’ bracketed inside ‘FRIENDS’, sums that story up. It came about six months after Layover.
On 29 November the same year came ‘Winter Ahead (with PARK HYO SHIN)’. The album notes introduce it as jazz pop and say saxophone, trumpet and prepared piano set its mood.
Military service
His military service began in December 2023 and ended on 10 June 2025. Hankook Ilbo reported that he was discharged alongside RM, the day before Jimin and Jung Kook.
What to watch now
The solo work runs from the one-song singles through Layover to ‘FRI(END)S’ and ‘Winter Ahead’. According to Star News, the FIFA World Cup final halftime show on 19 July 2026 opened with Jung Kook and V; that stage is in the story on the World Cup final halftime show, and the group’s 13 years are on the BTS hub.
