Who is j-hope?
j-hope is a member of BTS, which debuted with all seven members on 13 June 2013. The official site gives his birthday as 18 February 1994.
From the first record to Jack In The Box
The first record he released under his own name is Hope World, which came out on 2 March 2018 with seven tracks; IZM picked the opening track ‘Hope World’ and ‘Daydream’ as its recommendations. ‘Chicken Noodle Soup (feat. Becky G)’ followed on 27 September 2019, and ‘Blue Side’ on 2 March 2021.
His first solo full-length album, Jack In The Box, came out on 15 July 2022 with ten tracks. The album notes name ‘MORE’, released two weeks earlier, and the closing track ‘Arson’ as its double title tracks, and describe ‘MORE’ as old-school hip-hop driven by heavy drums and guitar. NME gave the album five stars on the day of release. The Korea Herald recorded in its piece on the group’s first 13 years that the same year he became the first Korean artist to headline the main stage at Lollapalooza, and Jack In The Box (HOPE Edition), the physical release of 18 August 2023, added three live recordings from that stage.
Street dance, and the 2025 singles
The album notes introduce ‘on the street (with J. Cole)’, released on 3 March 2023, as an easy-listening lo-fi hip-hop song and a fan song for listeners around the world. A whistle j-hope recorded himself runs with the melody, and the same notes say that besides writing the words and music he took part in planning the choreography and the music video.
The special album HOPE ON THE STREET VOL.1 came out on 29 March 2024 with six tracks, led by ‘NEURON’. The album notes say it takes street dance, the root of j-hope’s art, as its subject, that he took part in writing the lyrics of every track, and that it was made alongside a documentary series of the same name.
Three singles followed in 2025: ‘Sweet Dreams (feat. Miguel)’ on 7 March, ‘MONA LISA’ on 21 March and ‘Killin’ It Girl (feat. GloRilla)’ on 13 June. The album notes call the last one the final song of the solo single project that began in March, and say j-hope worked on all three.
Inside the group’s work
According to BIGHIT MUSIC’s album notes he worked with RM and Suga on ‘Yet To Come’, the title track of the 2022 anthology album Proof, and with RM on the writing of the tenth-anniversary single ‘Take Two’, which Suga produced. He is also named alongside RM and Suga in the credits of NORMAL, which reissued a song from the fifth album ARIRANG. In the Q&A Billboard Korea carried on the day ARIRANG was released, he said he saw “BTS 2.0” as meaning a step further in growing as an artist.
Military service
He completed his military service on 17 October 2024. The Korea Times reported that he came out of the main gate of the 36th Infantry Division boot camp in Wonju at about 10 a.m., the second in the group to finish after Jin.
