Who NewJeans are
NewJeans (뉴진스) are a girl group under ADOR, a HYBE label. They debuted at midnight KST on 22 July 2022 by releasing the music video for their first title track, ‘Attention’, with no photos or teasers beforehand, and on 1 August released their first mini album, New Jeans, with ‘Attention’, ‘Hype Boy’, ‘Cookie’ and ‘Hurt’. The debut line-up was five: Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein. The fandom is called Bunnies, a name announced on the group’s 100th day in a quiz-show video on the official YouTube channel.
The second mini album, Get Up, released in July 2023, entered the Billboard 200 dated 5 August at number one. On 21 June 2024 the group debuted in Japan with the single Supernatural, which also carries ‘Right Now’, and topped Oricon’s daily singles ranking on release day.
Where NewJeans stand now
On 28 November 2024 the five members announced at a press conference that they were terminating their exclusive contracts with ADOR, and on 7 February 2025 they announced a new group name, NJZ. On 21 March 2025 the Seoul Central District Court granted ADOR’s request for an injunction barring independent activity without ADOR’s prior approval, and on 30 October it ruled, in the suit ADOR had brought against the five members, that the exclusive contracts were valid. The members did not appeal, and the ruling became final on 14 November.
ADOR said on 12 November 2025 that Haerin and Hyein, and on 29 December that Hanni, had decided to respect the court’s ruling and continue with the label. On the same day in December it announced that it had notified Danielle of the termination of her exclusive contract. Of Minji, ADOR said on 7 May 2026 that discussions were continuing “in a generally positive direction”. The film 2026 Summer of NewJeans, released on the official YouTube channel for the fourth anniversary on 22 July, showed Minji, Hanni, Haerin and Hyein together, and ADOR said the specific plans and form of the group’s activities would be announced once discussions with the members were fully complete.
