The record

Bigbang First Single is BIGBANG’s first single, released on 29 August 2006 with four tracks. The title track is ‘We Belong Together (feat. Park Bom)’. YG Entertainment’s album introduction states that the group handles its own dancing, singing, rapping, lyrics and composition, and that this record was filled with the members’ own songs. The same text says the ten-part documentary that introduced the group before its debut stage had drawn more than 1.6 million views on GomTV alone.

G-Dragon composed the title track, G-Dragon and T.O.P wrote it together, and Teddy arranged it. The album introduction says that, unusually for a debut single, most of the song is carried by the two rappers rather than by a melody, and picks out the back-and-forth patterns of the rap — written as a conversation between two men about the same woman — as what there is to listen for.

Reviews

IZM covered the song on its singles page for August 2006, where three writers each file a short note of their own.

Kim Du-wan wrote: “Whether they will leave a hand worth trusting on the line of a YG Family now in its tenth year is something we will only know once a full album is out, but I do not want to deny that what they are showing is a sleek start, like a waltz on ice. What is in this one song is not a noisy, sprawling debut but a sweet and solid arrival.” He also wrote that the song felt to him like a return to the 1990s.

Among the tracks

‘This Love’ is a G-Dragon solo, written, composed and arranged by him. The album introduction describes it as a rap song rebuilt around a sample of the American rock band Maroon 5’s ‘This Love’, taking only the guitar riff from the original so that a lighter rhythm stands out instead; the same text says the song had already been heard in the documentary. It was carried again four months later on the group’s first full-length album, BIGBANG Vol.1.

‘눈물 뿐인 바보 (Nunmul Ppunin Babo)’ — the title reads as ‘a fool with nothing but tears’ — was written by An Yeong-min and composed and arranged by Jeon Seung-u. The album introduction presents it as the record’s joint title track and as an R&B ballad that goes at the form directly, rather than laying a ballad melody over an R&B rhythm pattern the way it says Korean R&B ballads often do. The opening track, ‘Intro (Put Your Hands Up)’, uses part of a song held for the second single.

Around it

Three more records followed in the four months after this one: Bigbang Is V.I.P on 28 September, Bigbang 03 on 22 November and BIGBANG Vol.1 on 22 December. The dates and formats are as YG Entertainment’s own discography states them.
