BIGBANG in 2006: three singles in four months, then a first full-length album

The first record BIGBANG released was not a full-length album but a single, and not one single but three in the space of three months. The first full-length album followed, in December 2006.

Below are the four records YG Entertainment’s official discography lists, with their release dates, their tracks and the credits the album notes give, in order.

29 August 2006 — Bigbang First Single

YG’s official discography lists this record as a ‘1st SINGLE ALBUM’ and gives its release date as 29 August 2006. The tracks are ‘Intro (Put Your Hands Up)’, ‘We Belong Together’, ‘눈물뿐인 바보’ and ‘This Love’ — four in all.

The album notes say the single was filled with songs the members wrote themselves. The title track ‘We Belong Together’ was composed by G-Dragon, and ‘This Love’ samples the American rock band Maroon 5’s ‘This Love’, with G-Dragon credited for its lyrics, composition and arrangement alike. The same notes list ‘눈물뿐인 바보’ as a joint title track and say the members wrote its rap part themselves.

28 September 2006 — Bigbang Is V.I.P

The second single came a month later. YG’s official discography lists it as a ‘2nd SINGLE ALBUM’ and gives its release date as 28 September 2006. The tracks are ‘La La La’, ‘Ma Girl’, ‘V.I.P’ and ‘La La La (Inst.)’ — four in all.

According to the album notes, the title track ‘La-La-La’ was worked on by YG’s main producer Perry together with G-Dragon, was also used as the theme music of the reality documentary about BIGBANG that aired before its debut, and had already been performed at YG’s 10th-anniversary concert. ‘V.I.P’ is built entirely from the members’ rapping, composed jointly by the composer Kim Do-hyun and G-Dragon, with every member taking part in the lyrics. ‘Ma Girl’ is a solo song by Taeyang, with lyrics by G-Dragon.

22 November 2006 — Bigbang 03

The third single came two months after that. YG’s official discography lists it as a ‘3rd SINGLE ALBUM’ and gives its release date as 22 November 2006. The tracks are ‘Victory (Intro)’, ‘BigBang’, ‘Forever With You’, ‘Good Bye Baby’ and ‘웃어본다’ — five in all.

The album notes say the two earlier singles carried 3 to 4 songs each and that this one carries five. ‘Good Bye Baby’ has lyrics by Taeyang and music by Perry and Brave Brothers, and ‘웃어본다’ is a solo song by Daesung.

The same notes also record a plan away from the record: that BIGBANG was preparing its first solo concert, for 10,000 people, on 30 December 2006.

22 December 2006 — BIGBANG Vol.1

The first full-length album came a month after the third single. YG’s official discography lists it as a ‘1st FULL ALBUM’ , gives its release date as 22 December 2006 and its track count as eleven.

According to the album notes the title track ‘Dirty Cash’ is a funky pop-styled dance song whose lyrics criticise adults’ fixation on money. ‘흔들어’ is a club hip-hop song worked on jointly by the producer Brave Brothers and G-Dragon. The same notes say the album carries five new songs including ‘She Can’t Get Enough’ — the rest come from the three singles.
