Who is Jaehyun?
Jaehyun is a member of NCT 127, the seven-member group under SM Entertainment. ORICON NEWS gives his birthday as 14 February 1997. According to Xports News, he was still an SM Rookie when he began co-hosting MBC MUSIC’s Show Champion with Doyoung on 21 January 2015, as the programme’s fourth pair of hosts.
From the host’s desk to the screen
The hosting went on. From 20 March 2017 he presented the SBS radio show NCT’s night night! with Johnny, and on 20 October 2019 he became a regular host of SBS’s Inkigayo alongside MONSTA X’s Minhyuk and APRIL’s Naeun. The three signed off with the broadcast of 28 February 2021. The show’s producer, Jeong Ik-seung, told Xports News that they were “the longest-serving hosts of the past twenty-odd years to stay together to the end without a change”.
Acting began in television. Edaily reported in January 2021 that he had been cast as Cha Min-ho in the KBS 2TV drama Dear.M. His screen debut was the film You Will Die in 6 Hours, released on 16 October 2024, in which, credited under his real name Jung Jae-hyun, he played Jun-woo, a lead who foresees a death; Star News reported that the film had been sold to 76 countries. He told the same outlet, “The story was so gripping that I read the script in one go the moment I got it, so I really wanted to play Jun-woo, and that is how I came to be part of it.”
From a first solo song to J
His first solo song was ‘Forever Only’, released on 18 August 2022 through SM’s music project STATION : NCT LAB. SM said the lyrics, which he wrote himself, carry the wish that one person, at least, will stay by his side while everything else moves on. The project’s seventh release, ‘Horizon’, followed on 8 August 2023; Hankook Ilbo described it as an R&B song he co-wrote and co-composed, inspired by the view after a plane took off.
His first solo album, J, came out on 26 August 2024 with eight tracks led by ‘Smoke’. After the release SM’s newsroom wrote that he had taken part in every stage of making it, from its direction to its lyrics and music, and that he picked every song himself, wanting an album that would not follow trends. The single ‘Unconditional’ came two months later.
The army band, and Mono
On 26 September 2024 SM announced that Jaehyun had been accepted into the army band and would enlist for active duty on 4 November. Before leaving, on 26 and 27 October, he held his first solo fan-con, Mute, at the Olympic Park Handball Gymnasium in Seoul. According to Money Today, he served about 18 months as an army band soldier and was discharged on 3 May 2026.
SM announced the fan-con tour Mono the next day. Sports Kyunghyang described its theme as picking up the story of Mute: Jaehyun, unmuted, finding his own colour and sound again. The tour opened at Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul on 6 and 7 June and ran through Macau, Jakarta and Bangkok to Taipei Music Center on 4 and 5 July; Dispatch counted eight shows in five cities. At the last one he said, “I prepared this fan-con because I wanted to greet NCTzen first after my discharge, and it doesn’t feel real that the last show is already over.”
The single ‘99 Degrees’, first sung on that tour, came out on 10 July. In an interview with W Korea he called it “a song I wrote on Jeju, on my first leave from the army”, and said the title came from a phrase, “margin of error”, that had so caught him at the time that he wrote it in his notebook at the training camp. “You could say ‘99 Degrees’ is Jung Jae-hyun in those days,” he added.
A Prada ambassador
SM announced in June 2022 that he had been named an ambassador for the Italian house Prada, and on 19 June that year he attended its menswear show in Milan as the brand’s representative from Korea. According to Sports World, the Milan womenswear show on 22 September 2026 was the sixth Prada show he had attended.
