From ballet to K-pop
Mina is a member of the nine-member girl group TWICE. On ‘TWICE TV’ before the debut she said, “I gave up the ballet I had done for eleven years”, and that JYP Entertainment cast her while she was taking part in a global audition. She added: “I thought there were things I could do because I had learned ballet. So I don’t regret it (giving up ballet)” (Xportsnews). In May that year, on the first episode of Mnet’s SIXTEEN, the stage she chose for the mission was ballet as well.
In a 2021 interview with Allure Korea she explained the difference between the two kinds of dance: “Hip-hop and idol dance make you move your chest a lot, so it’s the opposite of ballet.” In the same interview she went through how she sang the bridge of CRY FOR ME: “the bridge keeps jumping from chest voice to falsetto and back, then slips into falsetto at the end.”
Lyrics
‘Shot thru the heart’, on the special album Summer Nights in July 2018, is a song she wrote with Momo and Sana. The records of MISAMO, the three members’ unit in Japan, carry ‘It’s not easy for you’, whose lyrics she wrote, on the debut Masterpiece (2023), and on the MINA edition of the second mini album, HAUTE COUTURE (2024), her solo song ‘Misty’, whose lyrics she helped write (ORICON NEWS). On the Japanese official site she introduced ‘Turning Tables’, her solo on the first full-length album, PLAY, in 2026, as a story of reaching out without hesitation for what you want in life, with “shoot” as its keyword.
Covers and brands
In March 2022 SK-II named her a global ambassador (Maeil Ilbo). With the December 2023 issue she stood alone on the cover of ELLE Japon for the first time, which was also her first solo cover of a Japanese magazine (Hearst Fujingaho). In January 2024 she attended a FENDI haute couture show in Paris for the first time, and in January 2025, the year the house marked its 100th anniversary, she became FENDI’s Japan brand ambassador (FASHIONSNAP). In between, in August 2024, she was announced as the Japan ambassador of the French jeweller Boucheron (Mainichi Kirei).
On the cover of the March 2025 issue of VOGUE JAPAN she wore her own pointe shoes, which she has long treasured. The shoot’s theme was ‘LAST DANCE’, taken from Swan Lake (Condé Nast Japan).
