Nayeon is a member of the nine-member girl group TWICE. She became a JYP trainee through its 2010 open audition, and in June 2022 her first mini album, IM NAYEON, was the first solo album to come out of the group.
Nayeon is a member of TWICE, the nine-member girl group under JYP Entertainment. On ‘TWICE TV’ in July 2015, three months before the debut, she said: “I auditioned in the seventh open audition in 2010 and came into JYP as a trainee” (Star News). Before Mnet’s SIXTEEN aired she had already appeared in the KBS drama Dream High 2, a cosmetics commercial and music videos for San E’s ‘가면 안돼’ (Gamyeon andwae) and GOT7’s ‘Girls Girls Girls’ (ize).
On the group’s albums she has written lyrics. She wrote ‘RAINBOW’ on the eighth mini album, Feel Special, alone in September 2019, and in October 2020 she was the sole lyricist of one track on the second full-length album, Eyes wide open.
On 24 June 2022 she released her first mini album, IM NAYEON, with the title track ‘POP!’. It was the first solo album to come out of TWICE. The agency explained that the title points to her real name, Im Na-yeon, while also meaning “I’m Nayeon”, and she wrote the lyrics of the track ‘ALL OR NOTHING’ alone. At a press event on release day she said that in the group she had never sung a whole song by herself and had been afraid of it, and that “recording this time, I felt things like ‘so this is a good way to sing’ and ‘I really did love singing like this’” (Asia Today).
The album entered the US Billboard 200 at number seven (Korea Herald), and on 10 July ‘POP!’ gave her a first music-show win as a soloist, on SBS Inkigayo (OSEN). On 30 November that year she received Best Female Artist at the 2022 MAMA Awards.
Her second solo record is the mini album NA, released on 14 June 2024. The title track ‘ABCD’ has lyrics by Rick Bridges and J.Y. Park and music by a team including Pdogg, and adds hip-hop to a mood that recalls the pop divas of the early 2000s (MK Sports). Sam Kim and Julie of KISS OF LIFE are featured on other tracks. Nayeon said that if the previous album had been a lovely, bright version of herself, this one she would describe as “‘a cool, strong me!’” (Edaily), and NA also reached number seven on the Billboard 200 dated 29 June.
On 21 November 2024 she sang the pop version of ‘Beyond’, the main song of Disney’s animated film Moana 2 (Ilgan Sports). On 1 and 2 February 2025 she played her first solo stage in Japan, eight songs at ‘BEAT AX Vol.5’ at Ariake Arena in Tokyo, and the cover she sang there of Ikimonogakari’s ‘気まぐれロマンティック’ (Kimagure Romantic) came out as a recording on 30 May after the band itself got in touch to ask for it (THE FIRST TIMES).
On 13 June that year she featured on ‘Era with NAYEON’, a single by the American singer-songwriter Tayla Parx (Dispatch), and in May 2026 she sang ‘괜찮아 사랑이니까’ (Gwaenchana saranginikka) for the SBS drama 오늘도 매진했습니다 (Oneuldo maejinhaetseumnida) — the song’s title reads “it’s all right, because it’s love” and the drama’s “sold out again today” (Sports Kyunghyang). On ‘MEEEEEE’, her solo song on the tenth-anniversary special album TEN: The Story Goes On in October 2025, she took a composing credit for the first time since the debut.
