Yushi is a member of NCT WISH, the six-member SM Entertainment group who debuted on 21 February 2024 with ‘WISH’. Mynavi News wrote on 4 July 2024 that before coming to Korea he was a member of EDAMAME BEANS, a boy group under Stardust Promotion in Japan, and that he joined SM through an audition and spent about seven years as a trainee.
A month after the debut, in an April 2024 interview with Star News, he said that at his first SM audition, in the fourth year of primary school, he danced to EXO’s ‘Growl’. “The reaction was just so-so. Lukewarm. I was so disappointed that I auditioned once more. That time I did a freestyle dance, and the reaction was good.”
After the long training, SM first presented him on 28 June 2023 in a video on the SMROOKIES accounts and the SMTOWN YouTube channel; according to Star News, one video each of Sion and Yushi went up that day. Introducing him on 24 January 2024, ahead of the debut, SM quoted the assessments of his mission stages on NCT Universe: LASTART: BoA called him “a vocalist who moves people, showing off the appeal he can bring to each song”, and Haechan said he had “a unique voice that will give the team its colour”.
Soon after the debut the group stood on the Tokyo Dome stage with its SM seniors. In the same Star News interview he said of it: “I once watched EXO’s and SHINee’s concerts at Tokyo Dome. I think it’s an amazing thing that I stand on the same stage. I thought, ‘This is really happening.’”
Two years later the first full album, Ode to Love, was also unveiled on stage first. Star News reported that at the Seoul encore concert at KSPO DOME on 19 April 2026, ‘Ode to Love’ was performed for the first time, opening with Yushi’s entrance in butterfly wings. In an ELLE Korea interview ahead of the album, on 30 March 2026, he said of football and music: “Both are things you do as a team, so I think they’re alike. You’re not doing it alone — you make it together.”
