Who is Asa?
Asa (아사) is a member of BABYMONSTER (베이비몬스터), the seven-member girl group under YG Entertainment. The agency’s official profile gives her birthday as 17 April 2006 and the group’s debut date as 1 April 2024. She and Ruka are the two members from Japan.
The road to debut
YG Entertainment posted ‘BABYMONSTER - Introducing ASA’ on its official blog on 20 February 2023. Sports Kyunghyang, reporting on the film the same day, described Asa as being from Japan and wrote that YG’s hip-hop style was what drew her to the trainee audition. The choreography trainer Lee Jung said: “She is the one who asks the most questions, and that is why she understands the best.”
According to the same report Asa wrote her own song, ‘DIARY’, while she was a trainee and performed it at a monthly evaluation. Asa said: “When I first came to Korea, having Ruka beside me was something to lean on.”
The final line-up was settled by the debut member announcement film posted on the official blog at midnight on 12 May 2023. According to The Fact, Yang Hyun-suk named five members first, then added Asa, who had been preparing a new project in Japan, and Rora, who had been due to join another girl group, so that all seven debuted with nobody cut. He explained: “‘YG Family’ is not simply a collection of YG’s singers. I think you, YG’s fans, are the real ‘YG Family’,” and added: “Asa and Rora are the members you chose.”
A member who writes
Asa is credited on the group’s debut song. YG Entertainment’s album notes on Bugs state that she took part in both the lyrics and the composition of ‘BATTER UP’, the debut digital single released on 27 November 2023.
The first full-length album DRIP carries ‘Woke Up In Tokyo (RUKA & ASA)’, which Asa sang with Ruka. The same album notes introduce it as the first unit track by the group’s two rappers, and describe lyrics that move freely between Japanese and English with wordplay built on onomatopoeia.
Star News quoted Asa from the round-table interview held on 1 April 2024 for the first mini album: “I want to be recognised for what we can do. We are always practising so that we can do both the dancing and the rapping well.”
Solo stages
At the last of the three Seoul shows of the second world tour, ‘CHOOM’, at Jamsil Arena on 28 June 2026, Asa took a solo stage with ‘Temple’. SPOTV News reported that six members each took a solo stage that night.
What to watch
Asa’s own credit sits on the debut digital single ‘BATTER UP’, and the unit track ‘Woke Up In Tokyo’ is on the first full-length album DRIP. The records and the official channel are gathered on the BABYMONSTER hub, and the two nights at Kyocera Dome Osaka in September 2026 close the Japanese leg of this tour.
