Who is Rami?

Rami (라미) is a member of BABYMONSTER (베이비몬스터), the seven-member girl group under YG Entertainment. The agency’s official profile gives her birthday as 17 October 2007 and the group’s debut date as 1 April 2024. Before the debut she was known as Haram.

The road to debut

YG Entertainment posted ‘BABYMONSTER - Introducing HARAM’ on its official blog at midnight on 2 March 2023. Xports News, reporting on it the same day, wrote that this completed the introduction films for all seven prospective members. According to the same report she had worked as a child model before becoming a YG trainee, and began learning to dance only after she became one.

The same report named her vocal colour as her strength and wrote that Rosé of BLACKPINK, her role model, had told her: “Your voice is so good and you know how to control it well.” Rami said: “I think I would describe my life as a YG trainee as ‘growth’,” and added: “If I get to debut, I think it will be the day my first dream comes true and the day a new dream begins. I really want to debut.”

The final line-up was settled by the debut member announcement film posted on the official blog at midnight on 12 May 2023. According to The Fact, Yang Hyun-suk called her fourth, under the name Haram, and the film gave as its reasons an unwavering live ability together with a knack for reinterpreting a song in her own musical colour.

The day the name changed

YG Entertainment posted ‘베이비몬스터 - 비주얼 필름 라미’ (Baby Monster - Visual Film Rami) on its official blog on 23 November 2023. Ilgan Sports, reporting on the film the same day, wrote that she had changed the name she had used until then, Haram, to Rami. YG Entertainment said: “It came from the nickname the members used for Haram, dropping the ‘Ha’ and calling her ‘Ram-i’,” and added: “RAMI also carries the dictionary senses of ‘beloved’, ‘happiness’ and ‘first lamp’. We hope Rami’s voice makes her a good singer who carries love and happiness to everyone.”

The same report described her as a Korean member with a soulful sensibility and a distinctive vocal colour, and wrote that she combined live and dance ability with a knack for reinterpreting a song in her own colour.

Her place in the team

BABYMONSTER has no leader. Star News reported this from the round-table interview held on 1 April 2024 for the first mini album, quoting Ruka, who set out who takes what and said: “On vocals it is Ahyeon or Rami.”

A verse she sang has also gone out on radio. SBS Radio’s official channel posted a film on 12 November 2024 of Rami singing a verse of ‘Lonely’ as a guest on ‘Cultwo Show’.

Rami’s vocals are on every record from the debut digital single ‘BATTER UP’ to the third mini album 춤 (CHOOM). The first full-length album DRIP carries ballad and R&B tracks such as ‘Love, Maybe’ and ‘Love In My Heart’ alongside the title tracks.
