What happened

BTS released their fifth full-length album ARIRANG at 1 p.m. KST on 20 March 2026. iMBC Entertainment reported that it was the group’s first new work in three years and nine months, after Proof in June 2022. The album carries 14 tracks including the title track ‘SWIM’, and Billboard Korea reported that RM took on the lyrics throughout.

A group live for the comeback went out on Weverse at 2 p.m. KST the same day, and a comeback live followed at Gwanghwamun Square at 8 p.m. KST on 21 March 2026. BTS told iMBC Entertainment that they were glad and grateful simply to have the seven of them together and able to make something again.

The members put a name on these promotions — ‘BTS 2.0’ — and each of them said on release day what the name meant. iMBC Entertainment wrote that the members opened this new chapter with an emphasis on Korean identity.

The other half of it is that this is the first album the seven of them made together after military service. The Korea Herald reported that every member had completed his service by June 2025, and 20 days after the album a world tour of 85 shows across 34 cities began.

What you need to know

  • The members each defined ‘BTS 2.0’. In the Q&A carried by Billboard Korea, RM answered that half of it was the seven of them being together again, and the other half was that they had to move somewhere and change. Suga answered “a new beginning”. j-hope said he saw it as growing one more step as artists. Jung Kook answered that it meant, literally, something new — a new direction, whatever that turns out to be.
  • The album has 14 tracks. The Kyunghyang Shinmun reported that the title track is ‘SWIM’, that the seven members worked together in Los Angeles last summer and that the producers included Diplo, Ryan Tedder and El Guincho. The same article described the album as 14 tracks holding “BTS as they are now”.
  • RM explained how the album handles Korean elements. He told iMBC Entertainment that rather than carrying those elements over as a fixed form, the group wanted to unpack them naturally in the way it works now. On the title track, the members said they hoped ‘SWIM’ would be a song that stays with a listener the more they hear it — “a song like life”.
  • The tour took over from the album. The Korea Times reported that the ARIRANG world tour, which opened at Goyang Stadium on 9 April 2026, runs to 85 shows across 34 cities, and that all 46 shows on sale at the opening had sold out. The stage is a 360-degree design with no front-facing section, and RM said in the same article: “I’m excited to finally pick up a microphone again and meet ARMY around the world.” Jung Kook described that format as both a challenge and something special, with the audience surrounding the performers.
