Lisa documentary Always Lalisa to world premiere at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival

What happened

Sony Music Vision announced on 20 July 2026 that Lisa is the subject of the full-length documentary Always Lalisa. The film runs 97 minutes. It is produced by Sony Music Vision in association with RCA Records, Tremolo Productions, Salt Water Productions and LLOUD CO.

The director is Sue Kim. She made the documentary The Last of the Sea Women (2024), about the lives of the women divers of Jeju Island, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 and won an A24 award. News1, a South Korean news agency, described The Last of the Sea Women as an Apple TV+ original documentary.

Korea JoongAng Daily reported that the film follows Lisa through a year away from the group’s activities as she starts a solo career, takes up acting and builds a brand. The film’s own description, as carried by Billboard, says that “for the first time since childhood, she steps away from BLACKPINK for a year of independence” and that “with the clock ticking before her return to the group, Lisa confronts the fear and pressure of launching a solo career, pursuing acting, and building a brand”. News1 also reported that the film shows Lisa facing the fear and pressure she feels while building a solo career and a brand ahead of BLACKPINK’s comeback.

The world premiere — the film’s first public screening anywhere — takes place at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from 10 to 20 September 2026 in Toronto, Canada. Always Lalisa has been invited to the gala presentation section.

News1 reported that the Toronto International Film Festival is the largest film festival in North America and that its gala presentation section invites works that combine popular appeal and artistic quality.

At the time of Billboard’s report, no additional information about the film was available, and no cinema release date or streaming date had been announced.

Why it matters

The year the documentary covers overlaps with the period in which Lisa widened her solo work. She debuted as a member of BLACKPINK in August 2016 and released her first solo single album, LALISA, in 2021. She then founded her own agency, LLOUD, and released her first full-length album, Alter Ego, in 2025. In the HBO series The White Lotus season three, released in 2025, she made her acting debut as Mook, a wellness mentor at a Thai resort.

Lisa played a solo set at the 2025 Coachella Festival. She then released ‘Goals’, a track on the official 2026 FIFA World Cup album, with Anitta and Rema. Anitta and Rema are the artists who recorded the song with her, and Billboard reported that the three performed ‘Goals’ at the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony. The ceremony took place on 12 June 2026 in Los Angeles.

The project first became public in May 2025. Sony Music Vision announced the then-untitled documentary at that point, and Korea JoongAng Daily reported that it would follow one year in the artist’s life as she takes time away from the group to pursue her own solo journey. The Toronto programme was published a little over a year later.
