Who is Sunghoon?
Sunghoon is a member of ENHYPEN, the six-member group formed on Mnet’s I-LAND. BELIFT LAB’s official profile gives his birthday as 8 December 2002 and the group’s debut date as 30 November 2020.
A member from the ice
Sunghoon is a former figure skater. Olympics.com, the Olympic movement’s official site, wrote in an interview on 16 February 2026 that he spent ten years as a figure skater before debuting with ENHYPEN. He said in that interview that he took up figure skating after watching Kim Yuna skate at the Vancouver Olympics on television, and that he had been playing ice hockey before. For the ten years that followed, his goal was to compete at the Olympics.
Newsis reported on 16 May 2025 that the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee had appointed him an ambassador. At the ceremony at the Olympic Hall in Songpa, Seoul, Sunghoon said: “The spirit of challenge and the focus I gained from going as far as the national team’s reserve squad in figure skating nourished me into who I am now.” His role as ambassador was to raise interest in the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and promote sport for all through sharing his skills.
The torch in Milan
He did go to those Games, as a torchbearer. According to Olympics.com, Sunghoon carried the Olympic flame on a stretch near Bolivar station in Milan at 4.20 p.m. local time on 5 February 2026, the day before the opening. Asked how it felt, he answered: “Honestly, I trained for almost half my life for these Olympics. Coming here as an idol is a real honour too.”
Asked which ENHYPEN song he would choose for a figure skating programme, he picked ‘Chaconne’ from DARK BLOOD. Its dark mood calls Black Swan to mind, he said, and a song with melody suits skating better than a fast rhythm: “It has a dreamy atmosphere, so I think it would be easier to put emotion into it.” He has also said the skater’s habits stayed with him on stage. Asked by Weverse Magazine on 21 November 2024 about his consistent performances, he answered: “I think it got into my body without my knowing while I was doing sport. If you’re up and down, you can’t last long as an athlete.”
Action in the trailer, falsetto in ‘Chaconne’
The DARK BLOOD era began with acting. In a Weverse Magazine interview on 2 June 2023 Sunghoon said the action scenes in the concept trailer were a lot like dance: he practised the punch again and again, then learned to time the moves with his partner, and in the end it was all about using the body. In a March 2025 interview with ELLE Korea he named the scene of himself on horseback in that trailer as the footage he was most pleased with.
In the same period he talked about experimenting to find his vocal style. For the title track’s hook he recorded with a technique he had never used before, and the part of ‘Chaconne’ that moves between chest voice and falsetto had improved through singing live so much on tour, he said. The B-side he was most looking forward to performing was ‘Karma’. In 2024 he took a falsetto part in ‘No Doubt’, the title track of ROMANCE : UNTOLD -daydream-, and said he was glad it suited the clean tone of his voice.
A line in ‘Highway 1009’
On ‘Highway 1009’, the fan song on the second studio album, the line “hold me tighter” is his. Sunghoon said in 2024 that he wrote imagining a trip with ENGENE along an endless road, and shared his first draft: “Under fate I met you again / hold me tighter / so that nothing can pull us apart”. In the ELLE Korea interview he explained that the lyric was originally a softer word for “tight” in Korean, and he changed it because it sounded awkward to sing.
A music-show host, and Brazilian funk first
At the showcase for the third mini album MANIFESTO : DAY 1 on 4 July 2022 he said: “Hosting a music show and watching so many artists’ stages, I kept thinking I wanted us to come back soon.” The headline of the MK Sports report that carried the remark named the programme as KBS Music Bank.
Sunghoon was also the first in the team to take on Brazilian funk. Etoday reported on 20 August 2026 that the genre was new to every member except Sunghoon: the style he had first shown in a solo remix of ‘Knife’, the title track of the seventh mini album THE SIN : VANISH, had grown into the eighth mini album’s title track, ‘Bloody Paradise’. At the media conference he introduced it: “We’re back with Brazilian funk, a genre marked by a powerful bass and an addictive melody that stays in your ears,” and compared its appeal to food: “It’s like tteokbokki eaten at a restaurant.”
He also explained the album’s story and choreography. If the seventh mini album was about a vampire beginning to flee with his lover, this one is about going through hardship on the run and realising that being together is itself paradise, he said. The performance is “choreography built around big movements”, with the chorus moves of gripping the T-shirt and rolling the hips, and sweeping the hair back, as its points.
What to watch
‘Chaconne’, the song he suggested for a skating programme, is on the DARK BLOOD release page, and ‘Bloody Paradise’, where the genre he tried first became a title track, is on its song page. ENHYPEN’s records and members are gathered on the ENHYPEN hub.
